Personal Conflicts

Next time you reply, and this is the mod talking, I expect at least 50% less swearing, and an overall more polite tone. Source: http://www.nuklearforums.com/showpo...9&postcount=16, krylo 16 occurrences found of various swear words. Source: http://www.nuklearforums.com/showpo...0&postcount=11, Lockeownzj00 10 occurrences found of various swear words. Source: http://www.nuklearforums.com/showpo...6&postcount=35, fifthfiend Initial semantic analyses indicate that if Lockeownzj00 did reduce the amount of swearing in subsequent postings by 50 or more percent and fifthfiend is in excess of the previously created swearing-moderation-allotment imposed by krylo at a rate of 20% or higher. These calculations may be of questionable accuracy due to editing features, but are considered precise to +-5%. Additional results posit that the aforementioned posting by Lockeownzj00 is characterized by one or more of the following: anger, attempts to make a point(arguable), arrogance, and possible satire. In contrast, fifthfiend's posting is, to use the colloquialism, "by-and-large" an ad hominem attack likely rising from consistent disagreement and a lack of respect for authority. Final hypothesis? The moderation of the boards is carried out with a distinct lack of agreement on what is and is not acceptable. The rules are clear, adherence to them is not. A recommendation is made for moderators to discuss abuses of authority, and more clarity on how to prevent further issues from arising. ==== Seriously? 1.I'm not a friend or alternate alias of anyone on this board. I've lurked for a year or so, reading what I enjoy, but mainly using it as a time-waster when I'm bored. I don't care who wins any discussion. I just like to read and consider counter-arguments in my mind to both sides, or simply enjoy the great humor that some of you provide. I couldn't really care less if the forums disappeared since all I really like are the comics. (Random Kudos: All hail Kurosen!) 2.You can argue semantics and what's right and what's not and who-is-allowed-to-say-what-because-they-have-been-here-longer-or-are-a-moderator, but I just don't care. It seems like fithfiend allowed someone to rile him up and that caused a post of such severity as I have never seen come from a moderator. Moderators are able to keep their cool and be just in their application of the rules. That's why they're mods. Losing it and "fucking warning you" is simply intolerable(imnsho) by someone who should SET AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT IS RIGHT. 3. The rules suggest that both were in the wrong, and I would agree, but a direct ad hominem? I present you thus: (3a)"If you're in a heated debate thread and are starting to take things personally or get overheated, walk away from the computer until you've calmed down -- the thread will still be there when you come back, and your opinions will be respected a lot more if you stop yourself from using arguments like 'your mom!'." (3b) "Presentation is everything." (3c) "Threads will be pruned to stay on-topic." (3d) "If you act like a jerk or CONFRONTATIONAL or like your crap don't stink, expect to be very, and forever, banned." [Emphasis added by me] Fifthfiend: I like reading your posts. They are thought-provoking and interesting. Don't let people make you lose your cool. I hate to see someone start losing their grip for being angry. Lockeownzj00: I agreed with you more than anyone else in the Airport Security Discussion, but more tact would have strengthened your argument considerably. I read over this and feel confident in it. If you edit/remove it, or ban me, so be it. I am submitting my opinion for others to consider and am willing to accept whatever limited consequences my forebears choose to place on me. I am not responding, replying, or reposting. I _may_ log in to read/reply if any messages enter this account, but, otherwise, no more from me. My first and last. No one else seems to want to call attention to it, so I shall - Mods should give advice, perhaps in the public forum as an example, but the language used and way in which it was used suggest an abuse of authority as anyone else would be almost insta-banned for saying those things to another poster. I leave you with this: "Finally -- don't take any of this too seriously or personally. Online words are only as real as you allow them to be." That is all. |
I'm curious why it is you feel the need to sign up just to tell the moderators they're not doing their job in a formulaic fashion.
It's not some sort of democracy or beauocracy - it's an internet forum. The mods told Locke to chill out, and Fifthfiend swears to, as I may put this, 'get the fucking point across'. It's their descision as to whether or not the amount of chilling being done is enough. I doubt this is something you need to really 'heads up' us about. It's not like our forum doesn't work. Why is it random people need to tell we posters and the mods how to do things here? Has it not worked beautifully for the last few years? |
More or less. there WAS that incident with Fifth a while back, but that won't be discussed here again. Besides, if I say, "Fuck this," or something in a demeaning manor, it's obviously innappropriate. Whereas, a majority of Fifth's swearing is as an adverb, like, i.e. "Motherfucking snakes on a motherfucking plane!"
Fuck this, not appropriate. Saying motherfucking twice as an adverb? it CAN be appropriate if said in the right context, in the right humor. And I agree with everything Mirai Gen said; seriously, why did you sign up just to do this? It feels pointless to me. |
Generally speaking, and I say this despite having nearly been warned or temporarily banned from these forums more than once in the past few years, I tend to think that Nuklearpower's subjective style of moderation tends to encourage a better atmosphere for serious debate than most objectively-run forums can tend to manage. That's generally because most of the moderators here aren't dictatorial or heavily biased when it comes to wielding their power, and even those that are (like Fifthfiend, lol) tend to have a sense of humor about it.
Seriously, try going to the forums of other popular webcomics and see what it's like there. Dominic Deegan and Order of the Stick are both pretty cool webcomics, but you can't last a second in an attempt of rational debate at either's forum, because it's degenerated into fanboyism, trolling, flaming, and basically hell on a pogo stick. |

You're trying to tell us our system isn't working...when it is. And there simply is no reason to change what not only isn't broken, but is working extremely Goddamn well. |
I'm going to try to address this as fairly and reasonably as I can.
This is because, let us be clear, I hate myself, and like doing things that make me unhappy. Also, inasmuch as this discussion remains civil and thoughtful, I'm inclined to let it continue, as it seems fair enough to question how we do things here, from time to time. I won't speak for any other moderator on this, and if one of them closes this thread and tells you all off, I won't be shedding too many tears. But of any moderator here, I should certainly be the last one with a right to complain of someone asking for an explanation. My response is forthcoming, but it will take a bit of doing, so let's not let things run along too far ahead of themselves in the meanwhile, please. |
*Is reminded of a scene from Kill Bill*
Ok, when I'm in a heated discussion, yes, I will fucking swear. Especally if I'm becoming esaperated with the person I'm trying to make my point across. Now, if I'm fed up with something, it won't even matter, because I'm still going to be snippy. It's who I am, and I'm not going to just change it to appease one person. |
I mostly think people come here because they like it. I think that the mods do a good job, and I am not kissing ass, because I am not altogether to fond of all of them, but they do what they are supposed to do. they help us kids play nice. They also are intelligent and have a sense of humor and generally let us have a good time.
I'd probably be the only to welcome you to the forums, invite you to read the rules, and have fun posting. The crux of it is, we kind of have a thing going here, that isn't anywhere else. Not one of us would respond to a comment with OMFG YOU MOMZORZ FUXXORED TEH HORSEZORZ! We just don't do it here. And we like that. The thing that bothers me is that you did this post and then said that you will not reply... That is not discourse, taht is saying that you are right and then running away with your ears plugged when we respond. Silly. We like it here, if you don't then nice knowing you. |

What he's talking about is the fact that we're lax on punishing swearing and angry overtones, and he thinks we should be more formulaic about it. I think that provided we still remain one of the cleanest and friendliest webcomics around, why bother tampering with it? |
I knew there was a reason I came to school today...

Domo, my man, why have you been lurking all this time? Please, I beg of you, stay a while. Not just because you gave the analytical finger to Krylo, Fifth, and Locke (which, as much as I kinda like them, was still all sorts of neat), but because you really go all out to state your position. I really have to applaud that. I do hope that you don't go back to just reading the forums as a lark and join a bit more in the full-time sense, because we could definately use someone like you. As for his point, why not knock off some of the swearing? I'm not saying have it be an enforced policy by any means, because I'd be banned in a fucking hurry, but maybe it would behoove the folks around here to entertain a little more etiquette, especially in a serious discussion. After all, it does make one's argument a little easier to digest overall, I think. |
