What's under that hat?!
 

I've been struck hard by a dark and terrible thought, one that came to me after reading through the forum a little, browsing the comic, and listening to The Black Mages first album. A singular and horrifying thought came to my mind at an instant and would not be erased until I put it both to words and to crude artistic rendering (as my drawing skills are...so-so...at best). But these thoughts of mine are hinged on one simple question...

WHAT'S UNDER THAT HAT?!

Black Mage is a mystery as far as his true identity. We know his 'official' name is Black Mage Evilwizardington, of course, and we know ALOT about his hobbies, but as to what he looks like...

Exactly. So, I gave this some thought, taking into account the kinds of actions he takes on a daily basis, his general attitude, and other stuff like that - only to find a very bizarre and disturbing answer right below my nose. I had been speaking about it and never realized that it could be-

I think there's a face. Kind of a normal face.

Just really, really messed up, mind-numbing eyes.

SWB has a hatless BM sprite. Kinda looks like Bill Gates.

I think it's not a case of what's under the hat, it's a case of nothing being under the hat. Black Mage's face is pure negative space. -3 Dimensional, you might say. Everything and nothing is under the hat.

Well, something beneath that hat has to take on a form that drives oneself made upon seeing it. What his face is depends on the state of his face's form. Does it reflect his being? Does it reflect his environment? Does it reflect the status of the cosmos? Does is reflect the balance assumed in reality?
In a more solemn topic, it can be assumed his face is basically something inconceivable, something which breaks that mind that cannot comprehend it. In a more humorous topic, it's a reflection of Fighter.
Or a reflection of something even worse.

Probably just really bad hair. Like a fro'. Or maybe he's the only bald character and is totally embarrased by it.

This quandary reminds me of a cartoon I used to watch. Anyone remember Ed, Edd, n Eddy? Remember how Double-D wore that hat 24/7? Anyone wonder what that was about?

...eh...

I bet BM looks like a normal guy, and is just trying to play it like he's dark and creepy 'cause he thinks it's cool.
