Money fer stuff?

Hello my fellow gamers!

I have a big question, O yes I do.
It's about gaming ethics, and what they mean to you.

For some background information, I used to play the free version of runescape with my best firend, but after some time I realized how boring it was and decided to quit, but my friend continued to play. That was 3 months ago, and since then my friend has gotten a job and has become a member. Yesterday, my friend offered me a proposition. If I were to get on my old account and bring him 1000 iron ores (which I have) and 1000 big bones, he would pay upwards from 100 to 250 dollars! (he has literally nothing to spend his money on, and these things take time to get). But the runescape rules state that there shall be no trading items for real life money within the game. So Here's my question:

Should I agree with his offer?

If I get caught, it's no worse for me because I don't play anymore. I also could definately use the money (for the wii I'm thinkin'), but this is against the rules. Should I continue with this offer, both of us gaining something? Or should I consider it unethical, and tell him to do it himself?

This is of a different spirit of what the rules intend. That rule is intended to stop eBaying of rare items, and the like. This is an agreement between friends; you're doing him a favour.

The real question is, is it ethical to take that much money for the task?

Sir Pinkleton 10-13-2006 06:49 PM

ah, I see, Ebay...

Yeah, he's pretty fanatical about runescape, I'll probably talk him down on the price a bit.

Ethically, I suggest killing your friend for liking Runescape so much, but I guess if you don't want to do that, just take the money. That way at least some benefit came out of the game. For once.

I'm actually a pacifest (I burn things, not people), so killing him wouldn't benefit me. I feel a tiny bit bad about the money cuz he's my best friend and I'm taking advantage of him. although, HE was the one who suggested the price for my work...

Teach him a lesson by taking the money.
Who knows what the hell he's gonna learn, but you'll be buying stuff instead of learning, so it's all win/win.

I thought you were going to talk about how honorable we are as players on multiplayer games, and how often we try to trick and screw over other players for selfish or purely malicious purposes...

Well, sorry, but I just needed some help on my particular situation. I've been meaning to make a thread about being honorable in videogames though. perhaps you'd like to make one?

EDIT: now that I look back, I DID start out with ethics in videogames overall, o well

EDIT: I'm making a better thread for this.

Well, I posted in your new thread, but seeing the critical and obvius difference in the subject, I'll give my two cents.
Taking the money gives benefits, but that much for something like runescape is stupid. Sure he might find it still interesting while a lot of people here find it garbage, but spending real money for that stuff is stupid. Instead, lower the price to about 30-50 bucks, how much it is for a Wii game, that way you won't feel the guilt. You help him in a game, he helps you. Suggest you invite him over as soon as you get it though to try out some multi-player game.
It's the least you can do for him buying you a game, considering you bought it with the money he gave you.

Magic?

But seriously, I have some gold to buy some, and I don't have anything to do. I like to see it as a job:It's boring, tedious, but I'm getting paid for it.

Actually, I was thinking on spending the money on him to GET the Wii, cuz I only got, like, $68 (and the Wii hasn't come out yet, has it?). I'll probably ask for it on christmas though.
