8-Bit Theater Box-Pixels

Ok, I made these in Garry's Mod, a Half-Life 2 expansion. Making these things called "box-pixel" art has become fairly popular around the forums for that game lately. I wanted to get into it, and I figured that making art of my favorite comic characters would be fun. Anyway, here they are!

Here's the list:
White Mage - http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3.../WhiteMage.jpg
Thief - http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...xels/Thief.jpg
Red Mage - http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ls/RedMage.jpg
Fighter - http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ls/Fighter.jpg
Black Mage - http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3.../BlackMage.jpg

Almost as good as the originals! But I don't remember the characters having scanlines.

YodaEXE 11-21-2006 12:04 AM

Yeah, those are actually the individual boxes. I can't really get rid of those lines, or there wouldn't be much of an image. Glad you liked it though :)

This "box-pixel" art concept fascinates me. If it would be possible/convenient, you should make screenshots of various views of the characters, zoomed in, tilted, whatever. Otherwise nothing makes this special but the effort you put into it.

Say, iyeru, I've seen you give out remarks for a while now.
And everytime I see you do it, you start by praising them... and then give such a blunt remark that it makes the compliment almost null and void. =/
At least, that's how it looks to me.

I can't speak for the people you're commenting on, but I find this most insulting.
You first say positive stuff, like just now:
You: "Almost as good as the originals!"
Me: "Well, that's nice. Makes me feel great! Let's see what he says next."
You: "But I don't remember those scanlines..."
Me: "Hmm... wait, is he liking it now, or not? o_0"

Very confusing, but again, that might be me. =/

Anyways, onto the critique: This is looking quite "life-like" indeed.
I can see absolutely no flaws in the image. Well done, old chap! =D

How did you do this? That is what I want to know.

Something tells me you didn't miss the first line of the post and Garry's Mod is just non-intuitive for spawning colored boxes.

Still.

My path in life is clear, and it involves cardboard boxes, paint and a warehouse.

@Off-Topic: That's because I can have that effect sometimes. Somehow there's always... err, something that makes you think I'm saying something COMPLETELY different.

A few questions came to mind when I first saw this: Did you tweak the boxes to non-collide so they don't get all jittery and break after a while? Did you use the smart 'nailgun' tool to get the boxes facing the proper directions?
