Thinking about starting a blog-ish website

I've been milling this over in my head for a while, but I was highly considering, as of late, getting a website to 'blog' off of.

This wouldn't be the kind of MySpace-y "kewl chatz with friends!!!" blog, but more of a gaming world/review site, as well as a place to plug the book I'm trying to get published. I figure any practice I have writing would probably be worth the shot, right?

Things that support my idea - Well, Tim Rogers seems to be doing a good job so far, and he's a brilliant writer. I probably won't be able to do the coverage like him, obviously, but as I said this is practice. I've also seen...

Things that don't - I can't name how many blogs that fail are on the net. I almost want to not even bother simply because of the sheer amount of work I'd have to do, and the very large chance of success. There's also the fact that I don't know shit about coding HTML or CSS.

Well, it's either that, or start a sprite-based webcomic. But I'm not funny.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

You should do that. I know I'd read it.

If you're starting a blog based on it's chance of failure/success according to some predetermined metric thereof, then just quit right now.

If you're starting a blog because you have things you want to say and you are interested in writing and improving as a writer, then go forth with my blessing.

I mean shit, you've probably written somewhere in the tens of thousands of words about videogames, here on this silly-ass little message board, with no discernable prospect of anything describable as success. But you keep showing up here, right? A blog really isn't all that different.

A blog takes literally like three minutes to get up and running, and then you just have to write. So if you want to start a blog, go start it, and write.

... As far as the sprite comic goes I mean come on, I think we all know nothing good ever comes of that.

EDIT: There, see? It's just that easy.

The prophecy came true.

As fifth has illustrated and I have found out (see signature), setting up a blog is actually dead easy. There are any number of blogging sites/softwares/whatevs on the intartron--just pick one and sign up.

You comport yourself here quite well, so yeah, I'd take a look if you set up a little bloggy something. Any reasoned and intelligent contribution to the discourse in the world of videogaming could only be a good thing.

I'm honestly flattered that the response was so quick to be "I'd read it."

Also, fifth: It was five minutes, not three. So there.

Putting things in perspective. 4TW.

Fifth tends to do that.

Gotta love the comments, fifth.

Write because you have to, because you absolutely have to. Good luck.

That's right. He does have to love my comments.

Anyways, to the topic at hand, I'm with adamark on the whole "write just because you want to" thing. You don't start anything on the internet because you want it to be a success (see Howard Dean), you do something like that strictly for your own enjoyment. Now go, blog the shit out of some unsuspecting web surfers! They'll never know what hit 'em!

Mirai Gen 10-31-2006 03:39 PM

Well, I already write by compulsion.

The difference is I have to wait, like, a few months to collect enough ideas to make a coherent and decent story.
