Uncle Pennybags is a sellout
Just wanted to know if anyone else has been annoyed by the countless amounts of Monopoly board game tie-ins. It all started with Monopoly junior, and starwars monopoly, and now anyone with a few bucks will come up to parker bros. and make a new monopoly! Friggin' Pokemon-opoly, cat in the hat-opoly, lord of the rings-opoly, just the same game with different peices and names. Now other board games are getting into it, it just annoys me.
I love monopoly, its my favorite board game, even though I suck at it. Why does it have to be such a whore? What's your favorite "-opoly?" |
Kraboppl-oply

My sister just bought a game of Simson-opoly for $35. People twenty blocks away smelled the rip off.

You have a very valid point. I fully understand you're annoyed, it annoys me too, to a certain extent, but... it is Monopoly. If I'm not sorely mistaken, the objective of this game is, after all, to maximize your profit... know what I'm getting at? :)
Not to say you're wrong. All the merchandising / trend-creating that's going on nowadays is really, really annoying, but noticing this in Monopoly of all things makes me smile. In a friendly way, be assured. |
I'm a monopoly game collector. I know it's a ridiculous hobby so I don't have much of them. But there is a good reason that Parker Bros. makes deals with different companies to produce a special edition board game for them. The game monopoly is not copyrighted. Turns out the guy who supposedly created the game and sold it to Parker Bros. took it from quakers who had been playing the game for years. So any schmuck who wanted to make their own monopoly game and sell it could do so. Thus the College-Opolies and the City-Opolies aren't Parker Bros. games. If Parker Bros. didn't make all these special editions, someone else would and they would begin to lose a large amount of their profits. It is a bit of a monopolistic standpoint, but they did make the game popular and then had their copyright taken away. And who the hell would buy Cat-in-the-Hat Monopoly?!!!

Yeah, I understand what your saying, and that isn't a stupid hobby, because monopoly is (if I may go into childish drivel for a second) totally and excellently sweet and awesome. I guess my problem isn't just with the copy-monopolies, but with the trend that was started. Look at board games today and you'll find lord of the rings risk, and simpsons clue, and I'm pretty sure those are copyrighted games, so there is no excuse for them. Also, the monopoly junior game wasn't even a movie or show or book tie-in, it was just a monopoly with $10 bills instead of $100 bills, so I'm pretty sure that wasn't monopoly trying to undercut the copycats.
Oh yeah, I surely wouldn't buy cat in the hat opoly. Especially because its based on the movie and not the book. WHY MUST HOLLYWOOD DESTROY ALL MY CHILDHOOD MEMORIES!! Damn you, jim carrey for ruining the grinch, and damn you Tim Burton for doing what four bad sequels could'nt do to Planet of the Apes. That was a bit off subject... |
My favorite has to be sadomasochism-opoly. And Microsoft-opoly.
|
They even have Bibleopoly! Now that is taking it to far!
|
CURSE YOU, THIEFY-NAME THIEF!! DIE!
Anywho, when they make a Bill-Clinton-opoly, a Monopoly-opoly (i.e., with a theme of old monopolies, like Standard Oil and U.S. Steel), or a Polotics-opoly, I will begin preparations for the apocolypse. |
Dont let the monopoly guy fool you hes an evil genius!!!!! hes going to create an invincable doomsday device to kill us all AHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!........
