Swords
Something I've been attempting to figure out: Are the swords used by Fighter and Red Mage single-edged Japanese-style swords, or double-edged European style swords? I've been looking through past comics, but they seem to always vary in appearance just slightly.

Fighter uses the swords he nicked from Drizz'l (the single-edged golden ones) and his Kenshido swords (the double-bladed broadswords).
RM... well, I *think* he prefers the double-edged one, but I'm pretty sure I've seen him use daggers like BM's too... hm. Sooooo... there's some variety. Maybe RM's swords have their own statsheets and can change appearance... |
Each FF character is capable of carrying 4 weapons at a time. So Fighter obviously has the two from Drizz'l and the two Kenshido (if I may assume that is accurate as I steal the term from Quickman X).
If we've seen RM with a broad sword and a knife, who knows what other weapons he may posess. Perhaps stellar genius and a lost pencil for recording damage... |
I don't believe I've ever seen Red Mage with a knife.
As to the original question, I looked closely at Fighter's blue swords, and it seems they taper almost identically at the tip (compare to Drizz'l's swords), suggesting they're broadswords. The taper is all of one pixel off symmetry, but I tried re-spriting it with a symmetrical taper and didn't find a way to make the hilt look right with it. Basically, it's most likely a broadsword, if for no other reason than Fighter has more European motifs in his design than Japanese ones. |

This makes me wonder what weapons every one else has.
Fighter has 4 swords. RM has ...i dunno..2 swords and a pencil. What about BM and thief? Bm only has a stabby knife |
BM has two stabby knives and his so called "smelly magic ingredients" which we've never seen. Theif has his cleverness, the one knife from way back in the beginning, and his ninja reflexes and thrwoing abilities.

Black Mage has plenty of knives...
Fighter has his 2 Vargus Style Swords, and Drizz'l's blades (Stabby and Slashy). Thief has at least 2 knives identical to Black Mage's as seen in http://www.nuklearpower.com/daily.php?date=010523, not sure if he has another weapon like the one in http://www.nuklearpower.com/daily.php?date=010314. Red Mage has at least 1 sword (which he sometimes wields like a two-handed sword), a pencil, and his character sheet. Oh, and his "ginormous" brain. |
For some reason, I think that the sword thief uses in #005 is a blood sword. Also, off-topic, anyone knows what comic the sprites got outlines?

Theif has used both a sword and two daggers. Though I don't remember him ever using that sword besides that first time when him and BM met. And didn't Theif have like some throwing weapons at one point?
Also, to answer your off-topic question, its mid-way in comic 15 that outlines start appearing on main characters. However they look like lines and not blocks. They get that good blocky look around comic 55. |
