MTV's 10 Best and Worst Video Games
It's actually a pretty good pair of lists. I agree with a good deal about them. Also to be noted, people voted for these at a webpage (GameTrailers.com), so it's not a comittee or panel type thing. Anyway, the lists.

Y'know, I'm almost positive that Barbie Horse Adventures got on that list because of Penny Arcade.
Digression. I think that it's a pretty good list. It's hard to categorize "Best" under any circumstances (Since there's always the problem of "What about replayability?" and "What about the impact it had on the gaming world?" and such.), but this did a pretty good job. |
Why is it that MTV is doing a better job of video game stuff then G4?
|
Needs more Chrono Trigger.
And cowbell. Other than that, pretty good list, especially considering it was hosted by EX-TREEEEEEEEM MTV |
10, 9, 7 and even possibly 6 on the "Best Games" list are VERY questionable...
San Andreas while fun has tons of bugs and crap... RE4 while totally amazing, its sill WAY too early to be giving it that title... Halo, well thats a HUGE matter of opinion there along with FF VII since with Halo it really didn't do anything new... it just did everything well... and the story was above average... but Goldeneye should really have that spot seeing as how it brought modern FPS games to consoles in a major way... Also the fight continues if FF VII is really better then FF VI and really can anyone here honestly tell Fifthfiend to his face that FF VII was so mush better then Chrono Trigger that FF VII rightfully deserves to be on that list more then Chrono Trigger? And personally, I would of replaced Zero Wing on the worst list with Mortal Kombat Advance... Anyone who has mistakenly bought that game at full price can attest to this fact... |
FF7, while not the best game, did do a LOT to bring RPGs into the mainstream. Before it had been a fairly cult genre, and this really helped establisha market for them in the US. So, while the game might not have been the best, it's impact does give it good ground to stand on in the list.
Personally, I would have swapped out Halo and replaced it with Half-Life, but the list seems to have focused on console games, and Half-Life is a PC game. |
Yeah, but having the biggest impact doesn't make it the best, nor does making money. Britney Spears has sold a crap-ton of records. Does that put her anywhere near the top ten best musicians? No. It just means people will buy something if it has a pretty blonde and/or someone with huge breasts.
The same goes for FF7. Zing! Also, yeah, I'd sub out Super Mario World for Super Mario 3. Fix it. Now |
I'd say FF7 does deserve to be on there because...well...fuck CT and 6. I would say Halo soundly tromps the FPS competition in terms of popularity as well, especially in the console arena. I preferred Vice City to San Andreas myself, and I've never even HEARD of ST2: Hyper Fighting.

I'd ask why on earth anyone is concerned what MTV thinks about videogames, but then I'd be throwing away the opportunity to ask why on earth anyone would be concerned with what 24-Hours-A-Day-Of-Fucking-Reality-Shows-About-Spoiled-Witless-Dumb-Shit-Teenagers-TV thinks about anything.
I'm sure there's some field of culture upon which running six-hour marathons of Look at Me, I'm Fucking Rich! qualifies you to comment, but I can't imagine |
yea they did worst games but EGM/Seanbaby did it first and better I might add.
As for top, I am agreeing that its too hard to declare best. I like what EGM did awhile back and do lists like "best in their time" or "most influential". Not to mention many of these games are apples and oranges. I cant compare Zelda to Metal Slug. I like both, but for completely different reasons. |
