Advice on a job

I'll skip the exposition here, and get to the point: I got offered a job with a damn good salary by someone I don't know, and didn't seek out. My initial encounter with this man leads me to believe that he's well-intentioned, but I don't know much about him or his company. Of course, I'm sure this will turn out to be something that can't possibly work out for some reason or another, but I can't ignore the possibility that he might be as good as his word, so I'm going to be meeting with him to discuss matters of business. Worst case scenario; I've wasted a couple hours of my time. That's worth it, to me.

Here's where I'd like to ask for your help, NPFers: Give me some ideas on what kinds of questions I can ask, and what I can do to make sure that he's not trying to scam me, he can pay what he's offering, and there's some level of security to the job. I have a good slimeball radar, and he hasn't set it off yet, so that's a good sign, but any advice y'all can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: I'll just reiterate that I'm well aware of the fact that this will most likely amount to nothing. The way I figure it though, I've got a better chance of coming out ahead than someone playing the lottery, and I've got less to lose as long as I keep my eyes open.

for starters, you could ask for the address of where his company is located and then look up the company on the internet or something to find out what kind of business practices they uphold. Maybe even ask him for a tour of the place if it happens to be in your general vicinity.

Also try and meet some of the employees, or to find out what other businesses they've worked with, anything to see if they have a reputation that's good or whatnot.

What sort of business? That will make the direction of your questions/research a little easier to work with.

You could look him up with the Better business bureau. They should be able to help a bit.

yeah the BBB and if he sucks the report him to the BBB!

That does sound a little odd. I've recived similar job offers.

If you're going to seriously look into it, ask him for referances. What kind of work has he done and for who? Does the company have a solid foundation, or is it an upstart? Look for signs of a scam...

If you go to the interview and they hand you $100 bills and have a cam corder in the room, you might want to high-tail it out of there.

Well... the basic things would be...

If you have to pay anything, its not good
Ask him who did he find you and why
Where is the main office (or his office)
a business card would be good (ask him for his card or company card)
The size of the operation (how many people he employs)
and ofcourse... Google the name of the Company, or any info on the business card to see what comes up

If you do get a phone number of his and you still dont trust him 100%, ask someone else to call this number and see what happens

By doing that, if it is a scam, you'll know

As I suspected, it turned out to be nothing. When he first talked to me, it sounded like he actually had a position he was interested in hiring me for. Went to see him, and he pulled out the ol' "job tree." It's about what I expected, so I'm not sore or anything, just a little annoyed.

Thanks for the suggestions anyway, everyone.
