The Oscars

The nominations came out today and I must say: wtf.

Johnny Depp? A fine actor to be sure, but why for Pirates? He was entertaining, but not one of the best actors of the year. On that note, what's with all the Sean Astin hate? He deserves an Oscar.

The girl from Whale Rider? You know, Keisha Castle-Hughes? Whale Rider is a fine movie, one of the better movies I have ever seen, but, geeze, that's just crazy.

Wayyyyyy too much Master and Commander. A good movie, but there are better.

Lots of ROTK love. Good.

Nothing for either Matrix movie. Good

American Splendor will hopefully get best adapted screenplay. It won't (Damn you Mystic River! DAAAMMMMNNN YOOOOOUUUUUU!) but still, it would be nice if it won.

Cold Mountian getting shafted? Harvey Weinstein must be weeping on his big pile of money.

The best picture nominations were good but every year Best Picture has one complete bullshit nominee and this year it's Seabiscuit. How hard could it be to find a movie better than that? I will cry if it wins.

I know I'm watching the oscars this year.

Forever Zero 01-27-2004 07:58 PM

If LOTR doesn't win best movie, an army of angry nerds will come and burn down the Oscars... not that I've heard anything... or arranged anything... >_>

And Cold Mountain may not have gotten anything because it came out too recently. They have a cut off for movies to get accepted. Maybe you should keep an eye out for Cold Mountain next year if it's that good (I haven't seen it yet.)

Regardless, I don't know if I'll watch it. Not big on watching all these awards shows, except for peoples choice, and I don't even watch that, I just like it more than the others because people get to choose who wins instead of these other judges who pick things, NOT based on what movies were actually best in the publics eye, but what movies were best in the eyes of a band of critics who 's views tend to be WAY off from what the people think.

Cold mountain is in this years oscars, Renée Zellweger was nominated for best supporting actress. It just was a tepid pile of crap, and was treated as such.

Forever Zero 01-27-2004 08:06 PM

Ah, my mistake. I misinterpreted what you said. Regardless, the only one I'm interested in is if LOTR gets best movie, and I can see that and cheer/curse about it the day after just as easily as stay up till nearly midnight to see it (The other flaw is these awards shows always drag on and on and on and on...)

BMHadoken 01-27-2004 08:11 PM

Wait, where are all the big important nominations?

Wheres Best Editing, Best Sound, Best Original Screenplay, Best Use of Sex, Best (list goes on and on and on...)

I like the Oscars...but golly, all the stupid categories...and I'm still watchin, if just to bet...

Best Animated Feature

There are only three nominees for best animated feature. What's up with that? I thought there had to be five nominees for each. Is it so they won't have to make the agonizing decision between Finding Nemo and Millenium Actress? :) ROTK better win just about everything it's been nominated for, it was the best damn film of the year.

Lycanthrope 01-27-2004 08:49 PM

No Big Fish? Forgive me, I haven't seen the press-release yet.

BMHadoken 01-27-2004 08:50 PM

Big Fish was good...just not exactly Oscar-worthy...

Mr. Wind-Up Bird 01-27-2004 08:51 PM

Hey, don't count out Brother Bear. It looks posed to take best animated picture. But seriously, why bother? There could be twenty nominees, and Finding Nemo would still win. They should just give Pixar an oscar every year.

Edit - Big fish is up for Danny Elfman's score.

Lycanthrope 01-27-2004 08:51 PM

In my experiance, "oscar worthy" is a rather lowly term. Hate to be cynical, but when Chicago beat LotR TT for best sound, I kind of lost all respect for the awards.

But Shrek won last year, that wasn't pixar.
