how come... (violence and heroism in RPGs)
I have posted this query on many a board, so what do you think.
If most Final Fantasy games feature the good guys proving that nicety and goodness will overcome violence and evil, how come they do it by Beating the "everloving snot"(S.B.) out of the bad guy and his minions?? Is that the light and love they are promoting?? what do u think.:brow: im not against this type of game. |
For people wanting to talk about videogames we have us this here forum about videogames, and we ask that you try and come up with a thread title that somehow indicates the actual content of your thread. Thread moved and title edited. Welcome to the forum.

ok, fine by me. I got yelled at in another forum for this being in the wrong place, so i was being cautious. I usually get something like this for this topic.:stressed:

No worries. It is an interesting topic.
Certainly an option for diplomatic negotiation would make for a much different gaming experience. |
Before you do post, please, no hate-posts on this topic, if your gonna post, make it add to the topic at hand, unlike some forum-sharks i met in another board. \=|

It's not the fastest board in the world, it can take a while to get people participating.
And neither that nor my first post were sarcastic. Also - double posting is against the rules here. If you have further comments just edit them into your last post, as I've done. Watch that sort of thing please. |
Well, around here you have to be patient and allow at least a good two or three hours for people to come upon this thread and decide whether or not they have anything interesting to say. Also, you have to not use chatspeak or double-post.
Especially not double-post. Anyways, this is an interesting point overall. Though I think, oftentimes, that the fighting is less about inducing hypocritically savage violence on bad guys than it is about self-preservation. See, the villains are trying to kill you, and yes, you want to bring about world peace and have everyone live happily ever after, but these fuckers are trying to make you die. I mean, pacifism is great when everyone's doing it, but as soon as one guy decides to get his brutality on, survival becomes the higher priority over ideals. EDIT: Soooooooo ninja'd! And by about a split-second, too! |

There are many video games out there that aren't violence based. Take for example Phoenix Wright: Ace Attourney. The problem is just that those sorts of games are not the best to make turn based and slapped "RPG" on. Just imagine... instead of Fight, Magic, Tech, Items, you'd have Request, Demean, Distract, Items.
"You coerce the corrupt politician for 49 influence points with your Yo Momma Joke! You have defeated a corrupt politician!" What would the end boss be? George Bush? Another possibility is that humans are inherently violent and video games in which you're trying to beat up some people are there so that you can beat up people without feeling guilty, 'cause you're beating up the right people. |
the logic on videogames sometimes goes like this:
There is thsi guy, he is EVIL. he will not turn good. There is the rest of the world, these people dotn have enough power to face evil, and they only want to live their normal and happy lives And there is that small bunch of folks who wants to have a normal and happy life, BUT they have the power to face Evil. So they face it. "Facing it" is violence (although there is a lot of talking and persuasion along) they have blood in their hands (or monster goo) so that everybody else dosent have to. Its what its called Heroical sacrifice. Dosent have to mean that the good guy losses his life, they just lose the simplier vision of the world that other people do. Giving up ther security, their lives and sometimes the presence of loved ones to pretect a bunch of people they dont even know, plus, the world they live in. |
