Frog vs. Magus

Ok, this has driven me mad everytime I have tried to think about it since I first played through on New Game +. If you kill Lavos after repairing the Masamune, but before fighting Magus, then Frog goes to fight Magus on his own. In the end someone is standing on the tower long hair and cape blowing in the wind.(weapon is not shown)

I have not played the PS1 version with animated cutscenes, maybe this shows more. In the game however, both Magus and Frog wore capes, and Frog would likely have long hair after being turned back. It was semi-long already and it had been a long time. WHO WINS?!

I want Frog to win because since near the begining I have grown to like Frog and sympathize, and then I got to see the confrontations from Frog's view. But after hearing Magus' side, and getting to know and play Magus, I like him too. I can't even decide who I want to win, much less who should win, or who does win.

Well, if you kill Magus instead of letting him into your group, you'll notice Frog doesn't change back into Glenn for quite awhile, and he still has shorter hair than Magus. Plus, Magus's sprite only has it's weapon when he's attacking, and Frog/Glenn always have the sword somewhere on their person.

Besides, that's also before you unlock the full power of the Masamune... and Magus is way cooler than Glenn.

Magus was cooler, and Magus is obviously more powerful then Frog/Glenn was. Frog would charge in, get killed by Magus' dark magic, then Magus would go stand on his castle in the wind because it looks cool.

You can get Frog to change back??? how??

Now on-topic. I think that Frog would win in a duel because he has the anger of being defeated and having his friend killed in front of his eyes. Frog's melee abilities are much better than Magus', but Magus has better magic than Frog.

This seems the most convincing evidence. I never killed Magus, I liked him too much, so I never saw Frog change into Glenn.

When you get the option to fight Magus or let him into your group, fight him and kill him. Once he's dead, just go through the rest of the game and beat it... at the end you'll be flying through Guardia in the Epoch, and Glenn/Frog will be the guy not wearing normal armor, and with a sword strapped to his back, with the Queen and King.

Yeah, he looks like a palette-swap Schala with a sword.

Anarchy_Balsac 01-29-2004 01:46 AM

it's magus without a doubt, i mean you hear the fight and al but the last thing you hear is magus' dark matter attack. if frog really won wouldn't he be the one with the last attack? and magus had no dieing attack like some square rpg bosses do

Ralvuimago 01-29-2004 11:47 AM

It would seem rather anti-climactic if Magus was the one who won.
Frog: Now that I have the Masamune that took me, like four or five sidequests to get, I shall defeat you!!!
Magus: Nope. *Kills*

Magus I think would definitely win since Magus could deal out damage a lot faster than Frog could, I think.

As far as who I would want to win is really a philosophical debate, do the ends justify the means? Magus, whose ultimate goal is to defeat Lavos, but takes an 'evil' path, or Frog whose goal is to defeat Magus for the evils he has commited. You could probably get a rather healthy debate on this in any philosophy class.

As for what I did, killed Magus because in the end I thought that is what I thought frog would do. But you can definitely see things from Magus' side as well. Not knowing that Crono would be traveling through time and be able to stop Lavos, Magus came up with his own plan to stop Lavos.
