Black Mage is as smart as he needs to be to best suffer in any given moment. Thus, he's smart enough to know that he is being swindled due to the incompetence of his comrades. But he's not smart enough to look at his new clothes before bragging about how awesome he looks.

Also worth noting, he's never quite smart or swift enough to actually prevent the aforementioned comrades from being swindled.

Would it be correct to say that Black Mage's mind, like everything else in the universe, works toward the deliberate purpose of making BM suffer?

I think that we need to consider the possibility that Black Mage is a subconcious masochist. Maybe losing his position as lord of hell finally sent him off the proverbial edge.
