#791: "Good thing my armor broke my fall."

Heavy plate mail armor will always cushion a fall from the upper atmosphere. It's a fact.

Jothki 01-04-2007 12:20 AM

Ninja hax. Reminds me of ground pounding in Super Mario 64.

xravi 01-04-2007 12:33 AM

Fighter did not seem so fightery in the comic

Schleppy 01-04-2007 12:40 AM

It seems clearer than ever in this comic that Fighter's gotten an intelligence boost from the class change.

I actually like that, to tell the truth - the fact that Black Mage still considers him to be the dumb one of the group really says something about both characters.

FighterFlight 01-04-2007 12:45 AM

"If Red Mage was smart"
HAHA!
Those idiots.

None can comprehend the true genius of Red Mage!

Rock Crystal 01-04-2007 12:51 AM

Speaking of BM, where is he? Surely the impact from Dragoon couldn't have knocked him THAT far off course...
More to the point, when will the other light warriors notice his absence and what will they do about it? My guess is, absolutely nothing. Although Fighter may operate under the illusion that they are 'continuing onward' with their 'noble quest' and that they 'hope' BM will turn up along the way...

Tk-421 01-04-2007 01:26 AM

Multiple things I want to post about this comic:

1. Is it just me, or do Fighter and Thief rarely talk to each other. I only remember one point in the comic where they talked to each other (besides the fiend battles where Thief was more ordering Fighter instead of talking to him) and that was when Fighter was playing the silent game with BM.

2. How does Thief expect RM to mimic him if RM didn't SEE it?

3. Also, I think Thief, Fighter, and RM landed at the base of the mountain that BM is on. If you look in the background, you see snow start to cover the top of the mountain. Of course it could be just background.

Furioku 01-04-2007 01:34 AM

Hmmm. I can't seem to think of where BM would be but atleast we now know that he isn't exactly in the same are as the others. Though the moutain in the back sorta looks the same..>_>

bananarama 01-04-2007 01:35 AM

Ouch! RM landed on his head. His skull is probably a massive pile of bone fragments.

weltall gaia 01-04-2007 01:41 AM

Are the stupid characters getting a little smarter than usual? Garland formulating plans. Fighter criticizing Red Mage.

You don't end a question mark with a period. But you're right. Of course, since Thief and Fighter are awesome characters, I like it when they talk. They should do more of that.

He's the genius with a +1 in everything. Ask him why he doesn't randomly know. Plus, it's kind of suspicious, when you see someone right in front of you land on their feet when they're crashing to the ground at high speeds. I'd want to land on my feet crashing to the ground. Wouldn't you?
(I'm sure he can copy the ability to land on his feet that Thief had, regardless of whether it's a double jump or not.)

If by snow, start to, and mountain, you mean fog, covering, and yellow grass, then you're certainly on the right track. In the background, though, there's a snow cap on the mountain. Just, they're in fog. In yellow sticky grass. The mountain's probably way fuggin' off. And BM's stuck on it or on a mountain that looks like it that's before this screen. The latter would make much more sense. And don't tell me that the phrase "fog covering start to cover the top of the yellow grass" doesn't make sense. Because if you think that, you're the one that doesn't make sense.

I'm starting to think that they did sail over the mountains in the world map.. Where are they supposed to be, anyway? Where could they be in comparison to the air orb quest? I forgot..

Tiako 01-04-2007 07:41 AM

On the post: Rainbow Six: Vegas is always a good excuse. You don't want the terrorists to win, do you?

Long-Haired Narcissist 01-04-2007 07:53 AM

Heh heh Fighter and Thief made a funny. I like this one.

Also BM may experience another meeting with Darko while he's separated

Lord Kibble 01-04-2007 09:14 AM

I agree, Fighter and Garland have been uncharacteristically competent as of late.

Maybe he'll obtain a juggler's costume?

MasterKazoom 01-04-2007 10:06 AM

Wow. A new low (high, depending on your viewpoint) in the Fighter / Thief relationship. Which was kinda non-existant. And still is, one convo doesn't really make it a relationship. Damn, now I'm reading this in a double-entendreish way.

Skit 01-04-2007 11:49 AM

Man, I love the World Of Warcraft model viewer. ...Why did I do this?

Resaving .pngs is painful.

Fifthfiend 01-04-2007 12:05 PM

That was pretty awesome, Skit.

So what's Black Mage look like?

That does make sense to me. It would make more sense that BM is on a mountain they had passed earlier, because BM was "assisted" by the dragoon which did knock BM onto a mountain. However, the dragoon might have fell with BM at an angle that would put them on top of the mountain shown in this comic. As for my post about mountains and snow, what I meant was this:

In the background of where RM, Thief, and Fighter landed is a snow capped mountain that I think BM landed on. My main reason for thinking this is that the dragoon might've knocked BM off his course at such an angle, that they landed on top of that snow capped mountain. What we DO know is that BM and the dragoon landed in snow. I wasn't really talking about the foggy yellow grass area.

Well, at least RM didn't damage anything vital by landing on his head. :p

And Skit, those illustrations look pretty cool.

xravi 01-04-2007 01:38 PM

I was right about Dragoon messing with black mage's deriction!

Edwardius 01-04-2007 03:17 PM

Wait wait wait wait wait... Wait... Didn't Kraken remove RM's skeleton?

ElfLad 01-04-2007 03:18 PM

Yeah, but he wasn't able to write it down, so it didn't count.

Furioku 01-04-2007 03:21 PM

Hmmm....Since BM is up in the mountains, wouldn't that put him close to Gaia?>_> Well gamewise it would I would think, but then again I guess you couldn't really trrust anything from the game here, since Brian can do whatever he pleases, and has done this. >_>

Oh no, it definitely counted. The reason that Thief can't see more bones is precisely because Red Mage no longer has any. Rather, instead of possessing a skeleton in the traditional sense, Red Mage now holds his body aloft with the aid of magic, ala a macabre, meat-filled puppet.

Jumpmiming isn't twinky enough for RM. He's gonna mime Thief's being okay.

The worse part is- that does sound like a Red Mage stunt. >_<

Wow, I'd steal that in a heartbeat if I didn't already have Red Mage's recovery planned.

Bisected8 01-05-2007 04:38 AM

Red Mage is gonna lose his pencil in the fall, I know it.

And by "know" I mean "realise it may happen".

This.

And yeah, I'm trying to think of more examples, but I'm failing. Maybe Thief is lying.

Nice comic, Skit.

bass_virus 01-05-2007 01:24 PM

When it comes to Thief's landing, of course he can double jump. All ninjas can double jump. You show me a ninja who can't double jump and i'll show you flamboyant bastard in tights.

Real ninjas use grappling hooks and thus have no need for double jumps.

Yeah, doesn't really work without the pointy hat I guess.

Still, the other three looked totally great.

I'd sooner say he was ill-prepared and too kind. :)

He came up with the plan to rely on the lack of intellegence others had.

Likewise, he came up with the brilliant plan of trying to get Sara on his side, knowing she would be a great aid to his cause should someone with her talents join.
--
Despite what both I and everyone else think, Fighter has actually been pretty smart throughout the story. More often than not, he is just gullible.

Recall he knew about airship mechanics, some techno-babble about various useless things, and so forth. He has also caught onto a lot of things that everyone else didn't notice, and in 752, the Light Warriors show that they are aware of Fighter's insight.

Ashame Red Mage couldn't roll his dice in the air. Otherwise, he could have successfully checked to see if he had enough intellegence to form a plan. :D

Unless white mage appears, I doubt they'll even remember he isn't there, like last time. :)

Shirosen 01-05-2007 07:45 PM

What's with the comma splice in the last panel, Brian?

WillyFourEyes 01-05-2007 08:19 PM

Looks like poor RM failed his saving throw vs. fatal crashes. Too bad the "Aero" spell didn't come around until Final Fantasy III...he could have used that to cushion his fall.

Zeke 01-06-2007 12:35 AM

The best part is, I think you can actually do what Thief did in Metroid Prime. The Space Jump ability isn't available all the way through a fall, but IIRC there are situations where you can save a little damage that way (or by some other trick like going into morph ball mode).

Skit, those are awesome.

Burkion 01-06-2007 06:37 AM

To Skit: you got everyone but BM right. Mainly because you made BM look...badass, actually. He's not suposed to look badass. Ever.

To...who ever the hell else; I now love Fighter in the straightest nongay way ever.

Actually there's no fall damage full stop in Metroid Prime.

Zeke 01-11-2007 01:34 AM

What I meant to say, as any fool could have read between the lines*, was that you could sometimes avoid what does happen after a particularly long fall -- getting stunned briefly. Sometimes a second and a half is just too long to wait before dishing out more flaming death.

* Or, perhaps more accurately, entirely outside them.
