Dungeons and Dragons Online

Is this an MMO worht trying, and would I be better off playing it on a private server (and if so, which) or avoiding completely, and waht campaign setting is it, Ebberon, Dragonlance, Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk?

Major Blood 01-11-2007 09:16 PM

The campaign setting is Ebberon i believe.

Anyways, if you want to try it out, i suggest downloading the free trial client. I believe there is one...

It's definately worth trying out. Combat plays like a third person adventure game, rather than like an MMORPG, and the grind has been completely replaced with quests--right down to finding magical items (you find magical items by opening chests on harder quests while on harder difficulty settings, not by killing things, in general).

The leveling system is also surprisingly true to the core material (D&D), albeit with some feats changed or removed, simply because of the logistics of working them into a MMORPG. However, it is, for the most part, unchanged.

And, yes, there is a free trial client. 14 free days. I suggest downloading the client, opening it/letting it download updates, and THEN signing up for your trial when you have time to play, as that the client can take a good chunk of a day to download on its own, but signing up is nearly instantaneous.

How much a month was it? Also, are there private servers for it?

Actually, I'm there right now and it's 10 free days, I second Joshelplex's question on if there are private servers.

Coulda sworn it was 14, but eh.

As for price/private servers: Not that I know of, and the price is exactly the same as WoW. Which is to say like 30 bucks for the game and 15 bucks or so a month.

However, you can buy a year in advance and get it like half price.

I'm not sure I recommend it for the power gamer, you'll find yourself finished the entire game within a month or two. It's not a grind like WoW, a trait I found very refreshing. But I didn't play it very often (few hours a week at most) and I didn't reach endgame like the VAST majority of the player base has.

Server populations seem to have leveled off to a mature crowd if the forums are any indication. Most of the younger crowd have moved on to other games (making myself an exception, even) and the average age is late 20s, early 30s.

But, I think it's a really really fun game. I just love what they've done with combat, stealth, and things in general. I haven't tried their PvP system in full, but the tavern brawling was...interesting. Attacking the level 12 dwarf barbarian with the level 2 elf sorcerer, weeeee!

Note: I played it for about three months in total. I recommend having people to play with, that you know in real life or online. Getting groups is difficult, and until you're experienced (and even then), you need groups for quests. The reason I stopped playing was the inability to find groups to go dungeon crawling, and school.

Nomne of my friends would have it, as they either play WoW, or wont pay. Im not really iunto paying either, but I really want to play this, nad I dont really have the time to DL the trial (really bad internet) So I was intending to find a DDO private server, but so far no luck.

Krylo 01-12-2007 03:35 PM

I actually didn't have any problem finding groups, thanks to the search feature. I mean, sometimes there wouldn't be a "LFG" thing posted right off, but you could then post yourself, and you'd usually be picked up within about 15-20 minutes... during which you could do some quests on solo difficulty.

Azisien 01-12-2007 03:49 PM

Keep in mind it depends heavily on, also, what server you play on, what time of day you play usually, and WHEN you specifically played/still play, because the player base of the game is significantly lower right now than it was at launch.
