Warhammer! (Not for the dial-up)
I just finished my Tyranid army, and I'm proud of my first miniatures for 40k that I've done. So, I took apeshit amounts of pictures and I'm showing them off here.
As plainly obvious, I love Starcraft and so I made the Tyranid Zerg color army. I used Chaos Black for the base coat, (Might I mention I love spraycans) then Liche Purple and Tentacle Pink. I used a technique I call backstroking - on the tyranids with shell armor, like the Carnifex, Gaunts, Warriors, and the like, it works out wonderfully. Not so much for Genestealers. Backstroking is just drybrushing up the scales. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/123/3...5c298a5a42.jpg My Carnifex just before squishing a Librarian http://farm1.static.flickr.com/135/3...4c5be15ac8.jpg The Gaunt Squad. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/146/3...7e72f8b8ca.jpg My Warriors. I'm glad the way they turned out. The one on the left actually has a conversion devourer - I just cut it off and stuck it on his hand with liberal glue. I like how it came out. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/156/3...2751e2b030.jpg I love Carnifexes. I have an image of my Nids fighting Tau, but due to the 4-image restriction I'm restraining myself. The army cost me 1k points exactly. I'm going to end up switching out the Termigaunts for Hormigaunts soon, and probably drop in another Carnifex. This Carnifex here has 225 point value. He doesn't die very easily. I enjoy watching players try and kill him. So. Your 40k stories, pictures, art, etc? |
No stories yet, I haven't actually gotten to play...I'm working on building a Tau army though, after playing Dark Crusade and finding out Brian himself digs Tau I got a bit interested.

Tau rape Nids. In disgusting ways.

I would play it but, It cost a alot of money to play. What with all the minuatures and stuff. Anyway to get that stuff for cheap?

You can get some off ebay. Most of them might be painted, but you can just spraypaint a base coat over whatevers already on it. Right now I want to get back into warhammer. Back in 8th grade i started to get into it, I even started to build a craftworld eldar army, and played a little bit with my friends, but back then I lacked the funds to actually build a full army. Now, I want to get back into the game, but no one here plays it and that makes me sad.

Actually, I was playing against a Tyranid player with my own Tau army and got owned pretty severly. We were playing the take and hold scenario - one where you defend a base or something during an assualt. I was on defense, the 'Nids were on offense. We had made the mistake of allowing the 'Nids to completely surround the Tau (according to the CR, defenders get one table edge), and so my Tau forces were quickly overwhelmed and slaughtered. I think it was that day though, that I learned XV88 Broadside missle salvos are fairly effective against infrantry. So, theres a story for ya Mirai Gen. |
I'm about to start an Imperial Guard army myself. I never played Tyranids before, but I did play Tau against them and I find it's really all dependent on whether or not the Nids can get close enough to tear the little blue heads from the neatly armored Fire Warriors before they're perforated by all those snazzy guns. Lacking any appreciable armor saves for the most part, the best tactic I find is to keep the big nids as far away from any Tau weaponry with the term "rail" in the title as possible and set them loose on the chewy, delicious tau infantry. There's nothing in the Tau army that can stand toe to toe with a Screamer Killer or a tyrant, all they can do is shoot the buggers.
Oh, and watch out for pathfinders backed up by a Skyray, nothing says lovin' like six hunter killer missiles wreaking havoc with the hive mind. Once the hive mind creatures are bonked those packs of gaunts and Stealers aren't going to last long under strength five Tau rifles. I find that the Guard can usually outnumber the nids, and your average guardsman can handle a few gaunts with little fuss in close combat, but what really puts the fear of man in those cold, empty alien eyes are tanks, as many tanks with big shiney cannons as you can field. Demolisher cannons are really the most reliable way to squash the bigger bugs. I like to use storm troopers too, they can mow down swathes of lightly armored nids with their hellguns, AP5 is usually enough to get through to the juicy bits beneath all that cartillage and chitin. I'd advise taking a firebase of termigants and tyranid warriors armed for ranged combat to keep the main guard force busy, while sending some stealers and maybe a carnifex down the flanks to sweep through the Imperial line. If you can maneuver into close range with the carnifex, they'll easily peel open any imperial armour they can get their claws on. The problem is surviving long enough under all those strength ten blast templates, hard work for even the sturdiest biologically engineered killing machine. Good luck with your Tyranids! pray they never face the fury of the Emperor! |
Tau have extremely good guns, and Tyranids excel at close-quarters fighting. It makes for a disappointing match, considering it's just a bunch of circle-strafing. I'm sure I could have killed them in theory, but it's not easy to get close when they have that additional 6' movement in the Assault phase, where as I have a d6 inch movement in the shooting phase for Fleet.
I needed Hormigaunts for that. They qualify as beasts. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/143/3...462942ebf9.jpg |
I was thinking about a good strategy to use with Tyranids against the Tau, I came up with the old decoy plan, You see it's quite simple, all you do is talk up how imposing, invincible and murderous your large beasties are until the Tau player makes killing off the brute his number one priority. Do what you can for the survival of that creature, but most of all you make the best out of his distraction and race a few squads of smaller but no less ferocious monsters at his forces. If you're lucky he'll go nuts trying to blast your carnifex with the bullseye pattern on it's carapace and forget about the nasty bunch of genestealers ready to pounce.
I'm not entirely familiar with Tyranid rules myself, but they do have some pretty good psykers right? Do they have any powers that allow you to target single characters? If not I'd think a lictor would be able to sneak up behind that Ethereal caste and relieve him of some unnecessary body parts. That's one of the best ways to take down a Tau army, off the head man and watch those idealistic bastards scramble. I did that with a unit of hardened veterans once. I set them up as infiltrators in some building near the Tau ethereal. They got to shoot the bastard on the first turn with a grenade launcher. Poor little blue guy didn't stand a chance, instant death. After I blew him to bits almost half the army panicked, I took the opportunity to charge in and do something you seldom get to do with an Imperial guard army, win some assaults! I love Tau, they make even the Eldar seem like hard cases. (Excluding those Scorpions of course... I think they do drugs though) |

And that Hammerhead looks kinda awesome, though it's hard to tell all blurry and from a distance like that, lol. I hope my minis look good when they're all painted and crap, so far I got ONE fire warrior done and I'm not that impressed. |
