Perfect Games
To you, what does a game need to be perfect? Waht are some of your perfect games? To me, a perfect game is a game that no matter how old it gets, how many times I play it, it's always just as fun as the first time. Metal Slug is a perfect game to me becasue it posseses these qualities, what are some of you peoples?

Resident Evil was a perfect game. Me and my friend beat it three times over the course of two weeks, and each time was just as enjoyable, adrenaline packed, and just outright amazing. For me, RE4 is a perfect game.

Hmm, well, uhh...man, that's tough. Every game, no matter how good, has a few flaws or something that bars it from being Perfect, I mean, absolutely Perfect, even Perfect in relative terms. Be it Chrono Trigger or being too easy or too hard to level in, or FFVI or V being too easy, or RE4's inability to move while aiming (I got tired of missing with the knife, too), or FFT's slow AI and poor translation and some other things wrong with it. I mean, I think probably my FAVORITE game at this point, at least for the PS2, is probably MGS3: Subsistence, and it has so many flaws it's not even funny, in comparison to a lot of other PS2 games. I certainly can't say it's perfect. So this is a pretty hard topic with me.

For the actual controls I would've much preferred to be able to aim while moving, it would feel much less restrictive to me. However, they left it in probably to retain some more of the classic RE aspects, too, not to mention the strategy and realism aspects you mention. It isn't all that realistic to be able to pull of headshots while running like you can in most third-person shooters.
This really just points out the subjectivity of saying any one game is perfect. However, I was thinking, and I think I may have a candidate for what I think is the Perfect Game. I have in mind Super Mario World. The gameplay is simplistic enough that if you die it's almost always your fault, it's a very long game with lots of secret levels and paths, it's pretty legendary in most people's minds, and it's nice looking too. Being 2D there aren't any camera problems. I can still think of drawbacks (too easy, a lot of people say), but overall I'd say if I had to think of a perfect game, it's Super Mario World. However (again), I really didn't like Super Mario World much, and I don't like Mario too much overall. Seriously. I played Super Mario World quite a bit but Mario has just never jived with me. If I even had to compile a list of games I LIKE it probably wouldn't be on there (if I had to pick one I'd probably pick SMB3 for nostalgic purposes). But is it a Perfect Game (relatively)? Yes. |
Ok, this is one subject I can donate a couple of games to, myself.
First one, in my mind, and probably a lot of others, is Zelda. Ocarina of Time is my personal favorite, but I know Link to the Past is there, too. Seriously, so many people love these games that I don't think the flaws even matter any more. Perfect games are pretty much what Zelda is famous for, really. And this might just be me being biased, but Super Metroid and Metroid Prime really need to be mentioned. Super Metroid is pretty much legendary at this point, so I don't think I need to go into details on that. Metroid Prime, though (and this is where the bias comes in), was pretty much what Metroid should be in 3D. Perfect setting, great atmosphere, awesome action, and a perfectly... well, Metroid-like feel. So, a modern perfect game, in my opinon. I just hope people will agree with me. |
Any game with skillful combat. I don't want to get stuck in one style because its "the best". I want skill to play a factor and not just I've got whats better than you. Super Smash Bros. is my choice here because its simple enough to develop your own style and the fighting is pretty balanced. Multiplayer is always fun, even if I'm losing at least I feel like I'm getting better and the situation isn't one-sided.
And then there are the games that just give a nice epic feeling. Shadow of the Colossus. Various Legend of Zeldas. Games where its just cool to see everything, where the world is portrayed beautifully. LoZ, especially, when you get to see the old, familiar characters. Shadow of the Colossus because it is very big and majestic. It sucked when SotC ended, I wanted more. Lastly, I'll say Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. It has aged well. It looks good, and it has good depth. I wish I never let anyone borrow my copy.:( Quote:

Metroid Prime would be better with Metroid Prime 2's scan visor and improved lock-on system. I played Echoes first, and the whole "lock-on random skipping between enemies during combat" thing really hurt my experience of the first one. That, and the barely different red square and yellow square scan system. The color-code in Echoes was just way more playable.
I have high hopes for Prime 3. *Ahem* and on topic, I can't say I've played a perfect game. Cave Story is close on the first play through, and the Hell parts are also close when you first find them, but the game could use a couple more levels. But hey, it's free and totally awesome in many ways, and you all better have played it by now. |
Cavestory for the ultimate, armageddonish win, but beyond that the First Super Mario Bros reeks perfection. If even a 3 year old can pick it up and play it's simplistic genius, it must be perfect.

.Hack, love the story, and I'm still working somethings out about it. The depth was nice and so was the (okay, it still had some) lack of clichés. Though the battle system was....lacking..a lot (attack, attack....wait a bit....repeat), I heard that was fixed in the 5th one, but I haven't gotten around to playing it yet so I can't comment. That and: the Sign and Liminality Hack series are both enjoyable (slap the title Hack on something and I'll watch it, maybe). And the main character isn't stupid or a jerk. But there are plenty of decent games, for me to like them all they need is: A gripping story, a none-low IQ main character (who isn't a jerk) and a battle system that isn't horrible and doesn't involve shooting everything that exists. I'm not that hard to please. |
