People seem to be in a comic-trashing kinda mood so I figured what the hell, you can never go wrong calling Fred an asshole.

You know I think my feelings about Megatokyo can be summed up as follows:

Every time I visit that site it tries to install a Japanese language pack for my web browser, even though it contains no content written in Japanese.

I mean, that just about says it all.

Jeebus H. zombie Chipmunk on a skateboard. And here I was gonna go borrow one of the print volumes of Megatokyo from the local library, just to sample the madness. Would this be a bad idea? I heard the plot's kind of a mess these days...

(Minor irony: They have Megatokyo, which is lauded on its back cover for the whole "webcomic making it to print" thing, but I think Penny Arcade might have done it first--and even tho' Gabe and Tycho are practically local authors where I live, the library doesn't have either Penny Arcade book.)

How conservative's your library? That might explain it. Most library's tend to put comic's in the kids section, PA would not belong there. The last thing we need is kid's acting like Div.... actually no that would be cool, they'd scull whiskey and cut up those annoying rapper kids with the broken bottles. Then smoke a cigar while calling the rapper kids pansies for bleeding.

Ontopic, as this topic can be, Fuck Megatokyo. It's essentially an okay comedy that morphed into a shoujo manga/Otaku stronghold.

That said some of the Largoverse bits can be good. That's another thing you have to understand, it's kind of got two major storylines interconnected(And a third smaller one). One, the Fred one is essentially a Shoujo romance story with Otaku mocking and low self esteem jokes, little supernatural except the requisite robot girl. And the Largo storyline whcih is surreal world with ninjas, ancient evil, assasins, zillas, ultra violent cynical models and zombies. The Largo world is getting more romancy as it goes on so if you can deal with mushiness it's an okay comic. But you'll definitely need to read the archives to get the storyline.

I started reading a long time ago, and it takes a lot for me to abandon a comic, and the Largo and to some degree the Miho storylines can be okay at times. Oh and never enter the forums, that's some scary shit right there.

We-ell, most of the comic volumes are in with the "teen" stuff, but I know they put a volume of the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen in the adult fiction section--not for the page after page of people in hideous poses of burny death from the Martian onslaught, but more likely 'cos of Mina and Allan Quatermain gettin' their respective wrinkly, scarry/vampire-assaulted thang on for about four pages. Or maybe it was the Invisible Man/Hyde beating/assrape, which still went on for even fewer pages than the secks, if I'm remembering it right. But still, I get the feeling it was the sex, not the violence that shocked the library enough to do that.

edit: I mention this by way of saying that there is precedent for putting comics in the adult fiction seciton. I just don't think it happens often.

I think the original Penny-Arcade book would have come out first, if it hadn't been tied up in legal hell for like four years, but they didn't get Attack of the Bacon Robots into print 'till like last year and MT's been in bookstores for a few, now.

Basically I like to think of it as a pretty hilarious parody that morphed into the unabashedly shit-tacular apotheosis of every shitty thing it was trying to parody, while systematically excluding any particular thing being parodied that actually posessed any kind of merit on its own.

Ah. Sorry, I mainly remembered the archived newsposts about the books on the PA website (and those only vaguely; my computer and the PA website don't get along very well, so I don't go there often). Makes more sense like that--but still, I think I might see if'n I can't trick persuade the library to purchase these PA books. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, right?

I take it, then, fifth, you were more fond of the earlier strips?

Me, for one.
Megatokyo has still retained the aspects that made it funny (admittedly in smaller quantities), and has indeed morphed into something that it was not (The result of Rodney Caston [aka Largo] leaving the project), but who says a webcomic has to be devoted to humour?

In any case, I find Piro's angst pretty hilarious.

Megatokyo wasn't first.

Tat has two months and a shitload of quality on Dickfa... Piro.

I'm pretty sure there were some webcomic books published out of the same comic hosting site that originally held sinfest before Tat published his first collection as well.

Of course, Piro is a talentless hack. It comes as no surprise he's also a lying prick.
