Started playing FFVII again
 

and I was struck with a question. I tried to fight the Midgar serpent this time around instead of getting the chocobo, and while I took him down pretty low, I couldn't kill it and had to run because I knew it was a losing battle. Was I just impatient? Or can you really not kill it on the first trip out?

You're not supposed to kill it. You "could" but by then you would probably have Cloud's level 3 limit breaks. You're "supposed" to catch a chocobo. I'll noy spoil anything else.

Yeah, i made the mistake of NOT getting a chocobo, and realized there was no way on earth for me to get the master summon materia, since by the time i got back, it was gone. yeah...that sucked.

If you want to beat him, you need to equip a fire ring on your best guy (Cloud most likely). Then when he uses Beta, he won't hurt that person. Hopefully they have a limit break ready since the snake will have about 1000 life left.

If you do kill him, run right after the fight or the next one will catch you and then you're screwed.

Yeah but I dont think you GET the fire ring until after you escape the Midgar Zolom the first time >_>

I've wasted the time to beat him the first time around. Difficult, but not too difficult. Getting Beta early is a great massive damage all spell.

I also wasted the time to get bolt 2 before I fought the first boss though (also to get 99 ethers).

Beta kicks much ass
 

Fighting the Midgar Serpant is prety much worthless untill you get enemy skill. Then you NEED Beta. Beta kicks so much ass, it was pretty much my most powerful spell till about the middle of the 2nd disk. It's cheep, efficient, and overwealmingly devistating.

Wow. All that fancy stuff... I suppose playing the game for the PH47 L3W7 is the "In" thing nowadays?

Yeah, plus there's those "master materias" that you can only get by mastering all the others of that color. Not worth the time if you ask me.

You can also get them by beating the emerald weapon I belive and then giveing the earth harp to the old man.
