The Metric System=Spawn of Satan?

This little discussion is to talk about the faults and problems of the metric system as compared to the English, or American system.

In my opinion, a foot is a foot, a yard is a yard, an inch is an inch. I buy 12 oz. steaks, not 20g steaks (or whatever). A football field is 100 yards, not 100 meters. Sure, the metric system isn't as messy in conversions, and sure, every other country in the world (plus practically all sientists) us it, but that doesn't make it any less evil! Evil I say, evil!

Elminster_Amaur 02-16-2007 11:31 AM

Evil? I stopped using the English system for anything other than my own height and the speed limit by the time I started driving. Y'know why? No, it's not because I'm one of them science majors, it's cause the English system sucks. Why does the English system suck? It's arbitrary. I don't CARE how long that king's thumb is. I don't care how big his armspan is.

Er... which king you talkin' 'bout?

Science clearly favors the metric system, it's just easier to use. However, even though I use it for most things, there are plenty of English (It's called Imperial, isn't it?) things we still use in day to day life. I usually prefer to my height and weight in feet, inches, and pounds (I'm 127 pounds high, eh ;)).

But for everything else, quit sticking to the shoddy old ways. Convert to the dark, clean side.

Fine. But when the french use their meters to take over the world, don't come crying U.S. (us, U.S... hey, I made a funny)

Lord of Joshelplex 02-16-2007 11:48 AM

Metric for life.

Ack! Infidel!

The fact of the matter is that metric is just easier, and by the time you get to college, the only thing you'll use anything else for is converting to metric. And that's evil. But we, as humans, are lazy. Most of the world now uses base ten numbers. So why not a base ten measuring system? I'm rather eclectic at this point. I use English for weight, volume, and driving, and metric for length and science. I barely remember what an inch or foot looks like, from lack of using them, but to ask what something's mass is? Or Heaven forbid, how many Newtons it actually weighs? You'd best get me a conversion table because I have no idea past a kilogram being where you start weighing people.

Edit: That and the English system was at least based on something real. The meter was supposed to be an even segment of the distance between the poles and the equator, but one of the partners working on it freaked because he thought it was too large and fudged their results. The other guy only found out after they submitted it and only confessed it on his deathbed. Now they define it by the speed of light.

Metric for everything but the height of animals and people.

And come on you're not alone US.

You're in totally good company.

Gascmark de Leone 02-16-2007 12:57 PM

Yay for those other blue countries!

And as for mass, goddamit, just use weight! You aren't living on the moon or anything... at least, I hope not. I'd hate to have missed out on that.
