8-Bit almost made me dump my girlfriend D=
We had this fight about if Brian was a good writer or not. My girlfriend is an awesome artist, goes to a professional art college, takes comic literature, already has a job offer from Turner Studios and I guess she's a bit peeved that someone who does sprite comics, which she considers ugly as sin, can get as much of a reputation as Brian did.
Then we got into a fight about how she hadn't even read Atomic Robo, and has no idea what Brian's real writing ability is about, and I called her high brow, and she got offended. Basically, I think she's a better artist then the Megatokyo people, but I also think that the folks that draw Atomic Robo are really good for their loose structure of the art, instead of looking so scripted and template. In closing, THANKS FOR ALMOST RUINING MY LOVE LIFE BRIAN! |
Don't date a girl who's like that. No matter how hot she is. No job is a sin, exept politics.

Tell her to read Nuklear Age. Then you guys can have a couple fap or something.

Anyone who can't realize that the art isn't important, but how you use it, and the comedy behind it, has a pretty bad sense of what art and humour is. I don't know if that's worth dumping a girlfriend over, but it isn't great.

8BT isn't about sprites or appearance, even though Brian is a genius with that aspect. If it wasn't for extremely well-written comedy, nobody would still be reading after 800+ comics. Answer: Your GF is a jealous snob because Brian has achieved a successful fan base that doesn't fit her model of how things "should be."

Well, she is right to consider sprite comics ugly as sin, though I like to think of mine as one of the least ugly.
Her problem with 8-bit seems to be that she doesn't believe I have "deserved success." You hear this a lot in discussions about webcomics that have "made it." People will say that, for example, Megatokyo doesn't "deserve" to be successful for one reason or another. I think it's kind of a funny comment. We're webcomics. It's not like we have these huge media blitzes, or PR teams, or multi-million dollar ad campaigns that force enough people to pay attention to us to turn a profit somewhere. Hell, I didn't even advertise my comic or tell anyone about it whom I didn't already know. 8BT's use of FF characters surely lead some people to look at it who might not otherwise have done so, but I have a hard time believing that the sprites are what keep people coming back. "I just can't wait to see how Black Mage stands there next!" |
Then again, remember that comic discussion thread recently where much (deserved, don't get me wrong) praise was to be heard about Fighter's shrugging pose?
