Power Rangers Overdrive

So it's that time of the year, when a new power rangers series has come along.

Currently I must rate Overdrive as being close to "Mystic Force" in terms of appeal and intelligence, although the complexity of the bad guys relationship could potentially result in deep entertaining storylines.

Yeah...right.

Thankfully unlike Wild Force this one is not campy and feel good. Oh lordy I hate Wild Force with a passion.

One thing I did find potentially alarming is that the Black ranger has once more been chosen to be portrayed by a black actor.

This has not been done since the original series(Black actors as rangers have almost always been green red or blue). This is due to the outcry about racial representation by color, such as Asian = yellow, black = black, valley girl = pink.

What could potentially cause problems for Overdrive is that the Black Ranger is not only a black actor, but in the show specializes in theft and breaking/entering. I've seen public outcrys over far less.

Eh, Power Rangers never did anything for me after season one.

I did get a little smile on my face when I fought "Goldor" in Final Fantasy 3 DS.

IMO, Power Rangers has gone from completely over the top, to a recycling toy commercial, with no real rhyme or reason to how each series relates to the prior, or even what exactly makes a Power Ranger a Power Ranger. Plus, from what little bits I've seen on occasion, they recycle the plots heavily as well.

It isn't a bad thing, but from my viewpoint Power Rangers is aimed at a specific age demographic, and that age demographic only. If you enjoy it beyond that, fine, but don't tell me the series has gotten all that mature, when a supposedly magic incarnation of PR has a train based zord. Or when the Power Rangers mock a show that looks exactly like Power Rangers, only to have them fight the monster in said show (I think this was a Dino-thingie Rangers story).

You missed the one series which had an entire planet get killed off, characters accusing others of murder, a long reaching storyarc rather than the crappy short term ones that are almost always in use and what I consider to be the minimum level of campy'ness possible in a Power Rangers.

Was that Time Force? I remember that one being more depressing than it's counterparts.

If there are more Power Ranger series than times I've jerked off, I'd say it's high time you can stop making new ones.

Naw, it was SPD.

Time Force had the whole badguy who isn't really a badguy and partially reforms at the end, while everyone leaves their new friend and the one he loves he can't be with blah bla hblah.

That reminds me of IN SPACE where the villain ended up being the red ranger's sister.

Though if you don't know that spoiler where the fuck have you been?

Mirai Gen 02-27-2007 11:27 PM

I dunno, I thought that Lost Galaxy was kinda a step in the right direction, and In Space actually had a pretty good storyline. For Power Rangers.

And no, that is not an oxymoron.

Axl 02-27-2007 11:37 PM

It's not very hard to have a good storyline when you include the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in the mix.

Live-action or not I don't care what the naysayers have to add.
