Command and Conqure 3 Demo
so they've got the demo out for CnC 3 (gamer's hell link), and its pretty sweet. played the one demo mission before work, and they seem to have remembered what made CnC great and expanded on its ideas. from what i've seen of the story and the game in general, its looking more like a redux of CnC 2, but thats not entirely a bad thing. what do you kind folks think?

Well... kinda. It's very much like Tiberian Sun, actually, but it seems to be sorely lacking in walkers and mechs. There's like... one for each team. Also, Zone Troopers look stupid.
I guess my main gripe about the game so far is that everything does SO much more damage than it can take. I mean, between the Nukes, Ion Cannon, Zone Troopers, Juggernaut barrages. Avatar Warmechs, Tiberium bombs, Shockwave Artillery, and much, much more (that's just for GDI and NOD...), the games will progress very quickly and will be over shortly. I'm still looking forward to it, but I'd rather have a game with units that can survive for a while in a fight than units that are numerous but fragile. Kinda like Halo vs Counterstrike. |
I partly agree with Kerensky. I don't like the overpowered Super Weapons that can take out almost entire bases in one shot. In the original GDI was more of a constant pressure assualt while Nod put everything down on one strike. In Tiberian Sun they leveled the playing field a bit although keeping true with the One coordinated assualt for Nod and the constant pressure being put on by GDI. It feels as if they just took away both thier strategy styles and gave them a "whoever can get to this point first wins".
I hope they made the stuff quick to kill to make sure that the games were kept quick in the demo. Maybe they'll fix the strength of the structures and units in the final. Also, I blame Generals for putting in this change. |
If this data is well known, consider it defunct.
For those gangstas who'd like play as NOD in the demo: when selecting a faction in the demo; highlight NOD and press "n". IT'S EASY! Would also work with Scrin if the demo had any data concerning them. |
thanks Axl, i hadn't heard about that little easter egg.
played it some more last night, and i didn't see what you guys were talking about re: things dieing to quickly. the infantry seem weak, even the big power-suit wearing troops. the bigest problem i had was figuring out how to counter those stealth bombers that the Nod have, since they just waltz past all your AA defenses (glad i spent money on that). i like the support bar they give you, and the whole 'call for air transport' option also, the Nod defense structures are handled is cool. |
In my experience, CnC games were often like that--You don't keep too many units around in one place for long, because they will die pretty quickly between static defenses that are actually useful, superweapons, and enemy forces. Not even the Mammoth Mk2 stood up for too long when it came down to it (Unless the opponent intended to Hijack it). Between the lack of Fog of War, and no unit limit, it has to be fast-paced.
I am also astonished that MT wasn't the one starting this thread, nevermind his lack of contribution to it now that it's up. CnC is like a divine magnet to you, man! Where are you! |
Not only do I have yet to try the demo, but I didn't even know about it until I saw this thread. Eh.
Have they overdone the superweapons again? That was my only complaint about Generals - one's arsenal of superweapons was always too numerous and too powerful. I much prefer the sort of battles that were had in the original C&C, where you had two bases throwing strike forces at each other until one crumpled under the pressure. I do wonder what they've done with my namesake this time...? |
they turned you into a regular weapon. nothing special or limited.
|
Well can always turn super weapons off. Thats what I always did in multi-player. I found them cheap over all. Only nice thing was in C&C you atleast saw the super weapon coming.
But I do like special units. I dont remember the C&C ones but in red alert they were Boris, Tanya, and Yuri Prime. |

Of course, the way you can take it out is either by destroying the controlling building (Ion Uplink or Temple of Nod), or taking out the opponent's power and THEN taking out the building. I'm guessing that a lot of the multiplayer will revolve around this... I can't tell with the skirmish games because the computer isn't quick enough in building it. But, yeah, the game has a lot to do with strike forces now. However, you can ALSO build a massive army and steamroller the hell out of your opponent. That's what I like to do. And... GDI Mammoth Tanks are massive, $2500 (a LOT) tanks that have anti-air missiles and dual cannons that can be upgraded to railguns. They're the strongest weapons in the GDI arsenal, though not necessarily the most strategic. You can't level a base with just one of these, but if you're lucky, you can do it with 5. The thing I love about this game is that you can't really win by spamming one unit constantly. To make them effective this way, you need a lot of money and a lot of time. Plus, the way that units seem to have a lot less health means that if the army is destroyed, you've lost all that hard work. So... it's much better than to have a group of Mammoths supported by Zone Troopers, snipers and Juggernauts than just to have a bunch of Mammoths. |
