Oh it was mentioned in passing in the article that she was concerned about people getting into her property and liberating her toygers. Since she obviously has some thought-out benefits to her breeds, i was wondering if anyone understands why animal rights activists would be opposed?

Because a lot of animal rights activists are insane. I mean,
she's not mistreating the cats, just applying selective breeding. I mean, these are people who rather have diseased livestock live in suffering and spread the disease, rather than have it humanely put down, because killing the animal is wrong.

I think the cat might scare children. I am so getting one now.

Don't get me wrong, I adore (actually, was darn near raised by) cats. I'm just failing to see how this tinkering is justified. The breed standard was copyrighted before there was even a successful MEMBER. If it were anything but a cat or dog that someone decided to do this with, it would create an international uproar. As it is, they're inbreeding and messing around with genetics over a tabby. Specialty cats are fine for show, but if you want a nice pet, take something common like a calico or tabby. I shudder to think how these animals will turn out mentally and emotionally after all is said and done.

Edit: Yes, I'm from PETA. People who Eat Tasty Animals. My argument is ethical, rather than whatever the ALF yahoos claim theirs is.

This is an, ah, what's the phrase...off topic forum, man. I mean, sure you've got a point and all and I'd love to have a rousing debate with you about the mental and emotional effects of selective breeding, or in animals at all, but in a place that's labelled as the "Hey now it's fun time" Forum, it's just kind of bad sport to walk into an "Awww, happy day lookit that hey isn't that cool!" kind of thread and trash the whole thing.

Kind of like going into a music-preference thread where a few people say they like Johnny Cash and downright saying "Am I the only person who wants to piss on Johnny Cash's Grave and then burn it? He fucking SUCKS HARD"

Sure, don't like the whole thing all you want, but to the degree of the seriousness of this thread, it was a pretty harsh buzzkill.

I'd say it's the only way you'll ever learn, but I think we can rule out that possibility at this point.

Anyway, putting feral cat genetics into housecats tends to yield interesting results. My mother's cat, for instance, is a quarter bobcat. The rest is siamese and himalayan, which takes up the front end of the cat. The back end is big muscular hind legs and a short tail, and her personality was bizarre even by cat standards. Definitely fun to have around sometimes.

A little bit, yeah.

But naw, Blues is a long way from needing to be warned. I mean, it is an expression of legitimate moral concern, and we've never really barred anybody from making a serious point in Off Topic.

As long as he doesn't take the occasion to launch into some tirade on how all cats everywhere should be locked up and spitroasted or some such awful thing I'd say he's a long way from Starkyville.
