Not sure if Life.com is a reliable source, if it is then ME WANTS ONE NAOW!

Skyshot 03-15-2007 10:44 PM

How long has this article been around? The Wikipedia article dates back to last October.

And I think that's the Life Magazine website. They've been around a good long while, so I think they're reliable. "But Skyshot, the New York Times and various tabloids have also --" Shut up.

Anyways, yeah, if they get what they're going for, it's probably going to catch on. Who doesn't want a vicious, evil little monster in their house that actually looks all vicious? At least you can't say you weren't warned...

PyrosNine 03-15-2007 10:47 PM

Awwww! If these wanted to kill someone and drag it's corpse up a tree, It'd be the cutest thing ever to watch it!

Now, if I can just get one that looks like a toy cheetah....

Major Blood 03-15-2007 11:18 PM

Okay, my absolute hate for cats has now been destroyed. And it's all thanks to Zicquall.

I hate you now.

Mirai Gen 03-16-2007 12:15 AM

CUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUTE

Okay now that I got that out, I only wonder if this is sort of like Red Mage's "Chocobo Sex" brilliant idea.

greed 03-16-2007 12:57 AM

To be fair the end result of this can't be any worse than poodles, chihuahuas or those hairless things. It'll still be a functional cat at least. Hell the emphasis on muscle, hydrophilia and normal amounts of hair are likely to make it more effective. Which means it could be a real pest if it goes feral. And yeah it is CUUUUUTE!

Probably should give her the DNA of my cat, she beats up German Shephards, just to make them more Tigery.

mauve 03-16-2007 01:09 AM

Tiger-cats. That's pretty cool... But y'know, I'm still waiting for them to develop a pirhana-guppy.

Melfice 03-16-2007 01:11 AM

... you do realize you won't be able to shut BMG! up now, don't you?

She'll be squeeling all over these forums now. *sigh* And guess who has to try and calm her.

Long-Haired Narcissist 03-16-2007 10:21 AM

I'm still holding out for a Liger...or a PanTiger(a mix between a panther and a tiger)...or an inverted white tiger(a black tiger with white stripes).

bluestarultor 03-16-2007 12:14 PM

First of all, ligers already exist.

Second, they're a glorified tabby (these cats, not ligers). With added neck ruff. Most of the ones you see still have the legs of the M left on their foreheads. I used to have a black and white one NAMED Tiger. The pattern is nothing special. Now getting the color is a bit harder, since you have to breed for depth, but even the face is a standard cat roster.

Satan's Onion 03-17-2007 02:27 AM

I'm already a sucker for cats and kittens, so I had to restrain myself from baby-talking at the computer screen when I saw those pictures.

I mean, c'mon. Those are adorable. I'd totally cuddle that.

I want to see a few of these get loose and start breeding until we start hearing reports of mutant Weretigers stalking the sewers of New York.

Nique 03-17-2007 03:07 AM

Oh man. All this talk of breeding specific animals to get paticular traits is giving me an FF7 flashback...

Must...Breed... Gold...Chococbo... Chocobo Sage... Gyshal Greens... Nuts... Racing... YAAAAAARRRGGGGBBBLLLLEE!!!!!

Fifthfiend 03-17-2007 03:47 AM

All this talk of breeding specific animals to get paticular traits is getting me hot.

Well, that's because she's not finished breeding the traits together.Selective breeding into a specific set of traits takes a long time, and she isn't there yet.

With some 400 Toygers registered, most of them being bred by Sugden and about 20 colleagues worldwide, it could be several years before the cat looks amazingly like its 500-pound muse—Sugden hopes by 2010. But even imperfect specimens exude a certain jungle glamour.

And they'll have a bit more than just tabby in them.

Jean Mill, a rancher’s wife who studied genetics in college, dreamed up the Bengal in the early 1960s as a means to rescue actual leopards from the fur trade: She hoped people would be less inclined to wear a spotted pelt if it looked like their beloved pet. The Bengal’s impact on the sales of stoles is uncertain, but in the 1990s, it went on to become one of America’s most popular breeds.

This kind of stuff work's better if you have a smoking-skull avatar and are named KRYLO.

Psh.

What exactly is the issue that animal rights activists would have with breeding domestic cats that look like their wild counter-parts?

Death by Stabbing 03-17-2007 04:18 PM

Do you think they could make it so allergic people don't mind them so I could have one at my house?

Your criticism of what works would work better if you weren't the guy who writes Highschool Starship.

You thought I wouldn't go there but I did.

Where are you getting that from? That wasn't anywere in my post. It talked about the bengal breed being bred to discourage the sale of leopard furs, her logic being people would be less inclined to buy furs that looked like the pet they love and care for.

Oh it was mentioned in passing in the article that she was concerned about people getting into her property and liberating her toygers. Since she obviously has some thought-out benefits to her breeds, i was wondering if anyone understands why animal rights activists would be opposed?

I don't do any writing, but I'll pass that along to the actual writer? And I think he'll be very hurt.

Because a lot of animal rights activists are insane. I mean,
she's not mistreating the cats, just applying selective breeding. I mean, these are people who rather have diseased livestock live in suffering and spread the disease, rather than have it humanely put down, because killing the animal is wrong.

xravi 03-17-2007 08:41 PM

I think the cat might scare children. I am so getting one now.

The breed standard was copyrighted before there was even a successful MEMBER. If it were anything but a cat or dog that someone decided to do this with, it would create an international uproar. As it is, they're inbreeding and messing around with genetics over a tabby. Specialty cats are fine for show, but if you want a nice pet, take something common like a calico or tabby. I shudder to think how these animals will turn out mentally and emotionally after all is said and done.

Edit: Yes, I'm from PETA. People who Eat Tasty Animals. My argument is ethical, rather than whatever the ALF yahoos claim theirs is.

This is an, ah, what's the phrase...off topic forum, man. I mean, sure you've got a point and all and I'd love to have a rousing debate with you about the mental and emotional effects of selective breeding, or in animals at all, but in a place that's labelled as the "Hey now it's fun time" Forum, it's just kind of bad sport to walk into an "Awww, happy day lookit that hey isn't that cool!" kind of thread and trash the whole thing.

Kind of like going into a music-preference thread where a few people say they like Johnny Cash and downright saying "Am I the only person who wants to piss on Johnny Cash's Grave and then burn it? He fucking SUCKS HARD"

Sure, don't like the whole thing all you want, but to the degree of the seriousness of this thread, it was a pretty harsh buzzkill.

Oh man, speaking of hypocrisy, I just turned a "Aww happy day lookit that hey isn't that cool!" thread into a serious talk about Off-Topic Forum Etiquette.

Off Topic Etiquette? It's a fucking oxymoron I tells ya!

Edit- AW shit, I'm probably gonna get smacked by Fifth again about playing mod and annoyin him. I don't like getting smacked, but annoying Fifth is so fun. Damn decisions! >> << >>

I'd say it's the only way you'll ever learn, but I think we can rule out that possibility at this point.

Anyway, putting feral cat genetics into housecats tends to yield interesting results. My mother's cat, for instance, is a quarter bobcat. The rest is siamese and himalayan, which takes up the front end of the cat. The back end is big muscular hind legs and a short tail, and her personality was bizarre even by cat standards. Definitely fun to have around sometimes.

A little bit, yeah.

But naw, Blues is a long way from needing to be warned. I mean, it is an expression of legitimate moral concern, and we've never really barred anybody from making a serious point in Off Topic.

As long as he doesn't take the occasion to launch into some tirade on how all cats everywhere should be locked up and spitroasted or some such awful thing I'd say he's a long way from Starkyville.

PS to Nique: NO U.

Enjoy spending the $6,000 to $42,000 getting her the cats.

Fenris 03-20-2007 05:00 PM

Plus shipping and handling.

These could either end up working really well or being a complete disaster. But damn if they aren't the cutest things ever.

I'm beginning to discover that there is a Penny Arcade for every occasion. For the following link could easily apply to what will surely become known as mankind's new "best" "friend", the murdering 'Toygers'.

Look at that face! Look at that evil face!
