Ripping Sprites

How the heck do I do this?

Sky Warrior Bob 03-19-2007 11:04 AM

Print screen from you emulator (you naughty person) & then go about cutting away the game background, until you end up with the sprite.

Of course, you might find sprites you need already on the 'nets. And of course, if you're talking about the comic, a number of the sprites are original & thus not something you could just find.

The best you could do there is shrink them down do size (trial & error) cute out the background, and there you go, you have your custom sprite.

Which I might add saves a ton of work.

The Shyguy Kingdomhas seldomly failed me.

Unfortunately Meister, it failed me.

Isnt there a way to view the data files of the game, and extract the sprites from there? See, the thing is, im lookin for some OG sprites, and yes I am gonna have to do this via emulaor, but I own the games on cartridge, so I think it's alright. Gate of Magus is the only place I've found, and it doesnt have enough.

I'm assuming that your robot game is for the GBA, and if so...

Yes. Most of us know how to, but others don't.

Anyway, open up VBA. First go to Emulator/Directories. Go to Capture and send it to a specific folder.

Then open up whatever game you want. If you're new at this, don't open up games dealing with isometic enviroments (something like 3D) as they are a bit tricky.

Turn off most of the layers by pressing Ctrl+ 1 thru 6. Any of these buttons turns off a specific layer in the game. Try turning off all those until there's your character and a white or black background

Do a specific movement with the character. As you're doing this, press F12 every single second.

Close VBA and go to the folder where you sent your screens too. Open one of them up in Paint. Use the paint bucket to change the background to white. Zoom in on the character and select your Marquee tool. Make a square around the character. Right click and Copy.

Then you either paste the character into a new paint document if you're making a sprite sheet, or paste him into your Comic. If you're using Paint, you'll need to turn off Draw Opaque to make the white box transparent.

If you're ripping maps, use the Map Viewer and the Layer feature.

THat's all to it. Hope I helped!
Got it from the internet

Edit: Also... http://www.gmdsoft.de/menne/z3c/animget.htm may work. In fact, IT DOES WORK. I just tried it out with success. The rad thing is that if the shot it takes is identical to the one before, it deletes it. IT'S RAD.

Here's a few OG Sprites

That keen but, even if I turn off draw opaque, when I move them to paint.net, I still get that damnable white square.

You just need to set a transparency color. Some use white, but the basic lime green on the pallette is very common on web sites.

Edit: As in you color fill the white background with it, then right click the pallette to set it as your background color and use Draw Clear.

I am very illiterate in Paint.Net, some instructions in computer retard would be preferred.

Heck, you could do it in MS Paint. I don't have Paint.NET, but I can show you the basics.

These should explain.

Edit: Alright, that just sucked. I'd make it into a .GIF, but I'd still feel like a heel. :sweatdrop
