The Anime Boys and Girls of the Day After Tomorrow

I dunno, I thought we could have some further discussion on the prevalence of stereotypical gender roles in anime and alternate directions in which the medium might hypothetically move.

Woo! My question can be answered!

Seriously, realistic women in Dead or Alive? Iyeru, are you smokin' the wacky tobaccy, or have I missed something?

And for other posters, isn't this kinda like parents groups getting on Bender for being a bad role-model? I mean, I know that there are some sad little Japanese girls who emulate anime stereotypes (ganguro are fantasticly amusing) and it's kinda bad, I guess. But it'd be sad for them to emulate any cartoon, not just the bizarre cartoon ladies they're exposed to, so what's it matter that there are only seven different girls in all of anime? Related but off-topic hypothetical question, how many different guy archetypes are there in anime? Not many more. Just a thought; not really expecting (or desiring) further discussion.

I'm not harshing on ya'll for discussing it, just saying it's a little odd to expect realistic characters in a cartoon. Relatable, human characters, yeah, but not boring, everyday, normal folks (at least, not for all characters).

But seriously, DoA?

we aren't arguing about realism, we are arguing steriotypes. The unrealistic thing comes from how its steriotypical that women look unrealistic. We aren't saying unrealistic is bad (ok some are) but the point is thats all we ever seem to see. You can only see H cups so many times before you go 'eh'

You know, it's not anime, but I'm a big fan of Lady from DMCIII. She was attractive, but not in the unrealistic sense of most VG and Anime women. Other than the skirt made entirely of ammo pouches and all the weaponry, you could almost expect to see her cute freckled face walking down the street. Plus she was a pretty good character, as well.

As an anime artist, I try to both move away from the stereotypes, and to some of reference them in a comedic fashion. If you eleminate all the conventions, it's not really anime. But making my charaters unique is a full time job that keeps me up at night sometimes.

Well I mean bear in mind, mostly nobody's criticizing cause they're worried about the kids, we're criticizing cause this shit is done to death and painful to watch.

Yeah, even I'm not sure where whatever point I had there went, but it's lost to me now. Honestly, that was my "I feel obligated to have some on-topic content in my posts" sense acting up. The important bits were the beginning and end, namely "DoA, the hell?!"

And I'm gonna drop it now for iyeru to answer or not, as he (or she, dunno) chooses. It's getting worn-out.

I'm a guy for one thing. Anyway, I remember quite frankly I was talking more about "facial attributes" on that one. Yeah, the cleavage sizes may be out of whack, but since when did anime not have a woman in the series with physics-defying cleavage?

For the last time, no. Big cleavage is what makes most anime sell. Either that, or the amount of perverted action that takes place. However, once in a while people buy the show for the story. Hey, look! It's Onegai Teacher! >_>

Lord of Joshelplex 03-22-2007 09:30 PM

Yes, every now and then, people will buy for story. Cas and point: Peacemaker, Gad Guard... oh wait, NEVERMIND!

thats the point. We are starting to see realistic proportions in some anime. A change to a more normal appearance
