Mirai gen is right. While it's sad that a pompous racist no-nothing asshole can get away with what he has (i.e. still being allowed to speak after all he's said) he draws power from attention, so until he does something new worth ranting about, can we let it die?

Jack is using the ol' get irrational, pissed off people who have no idea what the facts are to believe in you plan. Because video games don't appeal universally, he's trying to tap into the part of the population that's never held a controller.

He's got a bit of an edge here, seeing as a fair chunk of the baby boomers consider themselves too old to try em out, and they are a huge portion of our population right now.

The thing about this strategy is he knows he doesn't have a valid point. For all his faults and crusades, the man was smart enough to become a lawyer. He's not an idiot, and it would be foolish to think of him as such.

But by making as big a stink as possible, he can attract all the people who dislike video games for any inane reason that won't acquaint themselves with the facts.

Jack knows that in a straight up, logical proceding looking merely at the facts and nothing more, he doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell. Thats why he's hyping his stuff up and involving as much controversy as possible.

And the more he's mentioned, the more people hear about him. While he is good for (several) laughs, you have to realize that he's still getting attention and the more biased opinions we have about him (however valid) the more people can justify it by saying "well they're gamers, of course they hate him" after skimming a blog written in a frenzy of passion (or annoyance, rage, etc- pick your poison)

So if you absolutely must bash Mr Thompson, I suggest we keep it clean. I know he hasn't so far, but really, since when did you want to be like him?

I mean, for that argument to have made any sense to me, he would have had to mention a game where you actually target with a gun. Like Duck Hunt. (Not that I would have agreed with the argument anymore then)

Ah, from such small things grow such great hatred. All it takes is a psychotic focus that ignores both facts and anyone who disagrees with you.

i was pretty sure he was and still is a prick, when he claimed the youngsters trained themselves by playing the only shooter out there (in my knowledge) that doesnt even fricking work with a mouse. How can you train your shooting by playing a game wherein you cant aim!!!

edit: from wiki; all the shootings happennend by children who played videogames...so..are there still children out there who are in highschool that never played a videogame???

all hail democracy and its weakness for idioticy

Thompson filed a lawsuit on behalf of the parents of three children killed in the Heath High School shooting in 1997. Investigations showed that the perpetrator, 14-year-old Michael Carneal, had regularly played various computer games (including Doom, Quake, Castle Wolfenstein, Redneck Rampage, Nightmare Creatures, Mechwarrior, Resident Evil, and Final Fantasy) and accessed some pornographic websites. Carneal had also owned a videotape of The Basketball Diaries, which includes a high school student dreaming about killing his teacher and some classmates. The suit sought $33 million in damages, alleging that the producers of the games, the movie, and the operators of the Internet sites were negligent in distributing this material to a minor because it would desensitize him and make him more prone to violence. Additional claims included product liability for making defective products (the defects alleged were violent features and lack of warnings) and violation of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act for distributing this material to minors.[40] Said Thompson, “We intend to hurt Hollywood. We intend to hurt the video game industry. We intend to hurt the sex porn sites.”[41]

All i want to know is what did porn have to do with anything?

Sporticus 04-04-2007 12:01 PM

Porn is lust.

Lust and the Bible hate each other.

They had a falling out.

Nikose Tyris 04-04-2007 01:21 PM

heheh. Something I'd find funny: Jack Thompson, after all this time, having holdings and shares in companies like BioWare. He bashes them severely, they fight back, and it's really the best kind of advertising.

That's just an idea I've had- And for me a humorous one.

...

I'm gonna go and check now. O_o

Sex Porn is sexier than regular porn.

Chipper173 04-05-2007 08:55 AM

Oh man guys, let's go look at some sex porn sites!

Jeez, I'm gonna say that every day now.

Sporticus 04-07-2007 11:26 PM

Anyone know the name of the infamous Jack Thompson episode of Law & Order?

Lord of Joshelplex 04-08-2007 12:12 AM
