#835: "Oooooooooooooh!"
Had a lot of fun with this one. Good character moments and one of my favorite quotables in a while (regarding arenas, logic, and armaments).
|
Red Mage is God. Otherwise, I think I'm going to buy some of that starmetal.
Plucking... Plucking... He's plucking! |
Hm....a bit of a jab at the Star Forge?
|
Starmetal, eh? That could be a reference to "Conan the Adventurer," an early 90's cartoon. "Starmetal" was your typical indestructible alloy that had the additional ability to banish serpentmen into another dimension upon striking.
Then again, since it is Red Mage, it's more likely a reference to some tabletop RPG. |
I used to watch the hell out of that awful cartoon. The title almost involved pomegranates just to hammer the point home to everyone else lame enough to have watched the show.
|
I was thinking maybe an Order of the Stick reference, or more likely a reference to the same think Rich Burlew was referencing. Guess not.
Also, am I the only one that had to read it twice to get Fighter's line? |
Oh man what I really loved in that cartoon was they had this thing where every time a character spoke, they'd start out in a normal voice and then by the end of the sentence they were screaming. Like they did this for everything! If Conan wanted to say it was a nice day, he'd be like
"Well it is certainly A NICE DAY TODAAAAY!!!!" and by the time he got to "today!" the veins were popping out of his neck and he'd be trying to stab whoever happened to be convenient. And everybody did this! Conan, Conan's girlfriend, Conan's stupid fucking magic bird, the evil snake guy who wanted to murder Conan, random villagers who just happened to be passing by and didn't have fuck-all to even do with anything actually going on in the show, everybody! God I loved that show. |
Starmetal was used in planescape. It is harmful to creatures from the Far Realm.
|
Behold the powers of nonsense! It is done! "what" is done? Exactly! :D
|
And here I thought it was just a joke about how nonsensical synthesis is...
|
Starmetal is pretty common to just drop into fantasy worlds. 'Cause metal that comes from space (or the heavens, if you swing that way) has to be tougher.
It's from space. I don't get the "Plucking" thing, because supplementing an "f" in there seems like something that would just go right over Fighter's eight-year-old mind. I think I just missed it. Maybe 'cause it's 1 am over here and I'm supposed to be in bed for my class in the morning. |
My only guess as to the 'Plucking' bit, since an 'f' substitution seems out of synch with Fighter (although just perfect for Black Mage though, especially in regards to White Mage), would be Chucking maybe? As in Fighter gets to use the town to practice his sword-chucking on. *shrug* Or making chucks out OF the town.
Guys! Guys! Guys! Look! I invented 'thatched roof cottage-chucks!' |
Good comic. Plucking fine gags in this one, Brian--
I mean, fine humor abounds. Yay, tenuous references to Kids in the Hall sketches! |
I dont get the "plucking" joke, some implied it might sound like "fucking" however I don't see how that could be the case.
|
You guys have it all wrong.
Fighter heard "pucking," and thought they were gonna start a town hockey league. Dirty-minded bunch of so-and-so's. ... Also my last post was supposed to be a meta-joke to the effect of Brian had just said how totally lame anybody was who watched that show and then right away I launch into this completely unrelated super-nerdy tangent about it just on account of that being the kind of totally lame nerd I am. But then Skyshot ruined the whole effect by posting before me. Stupid Skyshot. ...Fuck, I need to get out more. |
In my mind Fighter thought Thief said a bad word and started going "Oooooh" like little kids do in school when somebody says a curse word.
|
Black Mage is terribly expressive for someone who keeps his face hidden. Especially in this comic it's nothing short of masterful.

Definitely a new favorite quote - "I believe in MAGIC and that still made no sense". ah, so good.
|
That really doesn't measure up to "In the arena of logic, I fight unarmed!"
I mean come on, that's classic witty retort material. |
A great comic from plucking, through star metal to "I believe in MAGIC and that still made no sense" and "In the arena of logic, I fight unarmed!".This last one is another classic quote made by RM.
Still i can't decide which one is better of the two... |
Red Mage's witty retorts rule.
|
Starmetal... So did adamantite get introduced into the comic without even visiting the Sky Palace? Fifty bucks says they don't even end up forging Excalibur/the ultimate weapon.
|
A message to RM:
NOOOOOOOOOO! Good Heavens, man! What are you thinking! You hold in your hands the fabled Meteorotic Steel material! To sell that would be as to giving away nearly all of your statistic points for a mere Dancing Lights spell! Don't do it! Thank you. I love the last part of the comic. Actually, the entire thing is pretty much pure win. Except Fighter's reaction being a bit ambiguous. Maybe a facial expression could have added a bit of clarity, or a finger wag, or maybe a "tsk." |

And besides, to forge it they would need a smith, and I don't know if the dwarves are willing to cooperate. |
Desmant: That definitely makes the most sense. I was reading OOOOOOOOOH! as something entirely different. Something more like Arnold Horshack's excited OOH! OOH! OOH!
OK, no more 70's sitcoms for me. |

Besides, since it's just a quest item, that's all you can do with it. It's like in MMOs where you'll have some supposedly enormously powerful and/or important item in your hands that you have to deliver somewhere, but you can't just keep it for yourself and use it -- or rather, you could keep it, but it's really just junk. It just has a name and description that suggests importance. ;) /relurks |
How many different types of indestructible metal are out there?
I know theres Darksteel, starmetel, and adamantite(I think.) |
The only limit on indestructible metals is your imagination. The starmetal reminded me Order of the Stick, though. That crazy hex swamp dealie... good times.
On the comic though, two very important things for me. First off, BM's expression at seeing the starmetal = priceless. I agree with the point made earlier, he's perhaps the most expressive one of the bunch. You gotta admit, the man has skills. As well, it seems to be unanimous that RM's arena of logic quote is made largely of win, the rest consisting of awesome. Truly, this is an awesome comic. |
This still makes more sense than when RM pimped their chocobos.
I was aware that it wasn't referring to "fucking" but for the life of me I couldn't understand what else Fighter thought it was. Yay funnies. Nice going, Mistar Clevinger. |
He thought it was a bad word and said "oooooooh" like a child would. Think Dr. Tran if it helps. :P

yeah...now I have to go see that video. |
Hmm that piece of star metal looks just like the key to Clark Kent's space ship in the show "Smallville" of course it also allows him to read Kryptonian and visit the spirit of his father Jorel. Wow I am such a nerd.
And I agree with you Brian if "Hot Fuzz" isn't in a theatre near me this weekend the world will burn. |
Well, I finally did it. After starting at ep.1 back in September and reading to 290, then stopping and then re-starting a few weeks ago, I've finally caught up with the rest of the world.
Just thought I'd share that. On topic: Great ep, excellent quotes! RMs final line is classic. EDIT: Quote:
|
That's just more proof as to how win it is!
That six-sided thing can let them read Kryptonian?? This may just be the lucky break/quest item they need! That is, assuming Kryptonians speak using only one word. And assuming that word starts with "L" and ends with "upa". Should be useful as a blunt weapon if not. |
Heh, I thought that the quote was gonna be "I believe in magic and that still made no sense"
