Can you tell me what kind of person this is

It's to prove or disprove a theory. I'm going to show you a two sculptures of the same guy and I want you to tell me what you can tell about the subject just based on his appearance. if you cheat and look up the model I will know.

Ancient Greek?

Squishy Cheeks 02-16-2004 10:35 PM

not that I want what you can assume about the person's personality.

Forever Zero 02-16-2004 10:36 PM

Eitehr greek or roman. One is obviously old, one (the right one) is more detailed then the other (You can see it when you look at the hair). The right one is relativly new and based on the old one. I can't think of much else.

Any info on what your experiment is?

EDIT: Personality? Wait a minute then...

Apletto 02-16-2004 10:36 PM

I'd say Roman actually, based on the hair. Also likely an Emporer, because, of the select who were sculpted in that era, Emperors were the ones shown young and strong like that.

Edit: Personality? Well he looks like a smug jerk.

Forever Zero 02-16-2004 10:41 PM

The one on the left looks more benevolent. It may be because of the destroyed features, but the features seem softer and kinder. The features of the second are more cruel and arrogant, from the slightly hooked nose, the somewhat furrowed brow and deep set eyes, and the apparent smirk on the person's face. However, the one on the right also has very clear and definite features, so it could be that if the first was undamaged, it would look similar to the second, but I'm basing this their current state, so my opinion stands.

He does look kinda like a smug jerk... but mostly he looks like he has no idea how to handle facial hair. I'm not sure if taste in facial hair is part of a personality or not... but yah.

Well the sculptures are pre and post Doryphoros (Took art history coarse last semester), which means that the first one doesn't focus on pathos (emotion) and the second one does. But I digress, I'd say that the one on the right (post-Doryphoros) appears to be cynical, cruel, arrogant, and powerful. The left bust looks expressionless like most, if not all, pre-Doryphoros statues. Despite that, he does look calm and benevolent.

Squishy Cheeks 02-17-2004 02:57 PM

Um, they are the same guy, way post doryphoros. I mention this in my first post. I too took art history, currently I'm taking art history of the ancient world. but those two sculptures are of the same guy. Not two different people seperated by centuries. the first one just got battered a bit more.
