#839:"This is gonna be the easiest fifty games I ever won!"

Took about eight hours to do this comic. Most of that time was spent on the last panel. Not sure how well the whole thing works, but I enjoy it. So screw you chumps!

zdude255 04-27-2007 11:10 PM

Amazing, gotta love all the FF references packed in at the end.

bass_virus 04-27-2007 11:13 PM

Wait so the point of this sport is to actually drown before everyone else?

I'm betting that Fighter will actually somehow manage to win fifty rounds of this game, and am I right to assume that NDA stands for National Drownball association?

RickZarber 04-27-2007 11:23 PM

So many references uncomprehended! I almost regret never playing any of the Final Fantasy sequels.

Eight hours? Wow, it really does take Brian all day to steal that much material. :p

nahmoss 04-27-2007 11:32 PM

Here's betting Fighter forgets how to drown, and thus can breathe underwater.

Lumpy 04-27-2007 11:43 PM

Fighter really needs to do some more actual thinking.

Kroze Gamegod 04-28-2007 12:21 AM

Wait...
Aren't Espers and Aeons the same damn things?
And nice taking the pic of the old Chocobo Racing playstation game.
I am not ashamed to say that game gave me lots of enjoyment!

And what is this NDA fever that has now apperantly shown up in the comics?
GET A HOLD OF YOURSELF MAN OR THE NDA's WILL EAT YOU WHOLE!

Used_Potato 04-28-2007 12:41 AM

What I'm wondering is how they get people to actually play this sport. Without the entry requirement being that your IQ must be less than the very concept of "less" itself.

I think Aeons are manifested dreams of the fayth, while espers are actual self supporting beings.

Cybren 04-28-2007 03:34 AM

I thought ESPers were psions who specialized in extrasensory perception

mattblack04 04-28-2007 04:47 AM

They are arguably the same thing, just different name. Think FF7 Thunder 3 and Thundaga.

Satan's Onion 04-28-2007 05:01 AM

Would it be incorrect of me to guess that "four men enter, no one leaves" refers to Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome? My father used to watch these films all the time, on VHS and when it was on TV, and that one's my favorite of the trilogy.

No. Espers are beasts of pure Magical Energy granted to the by the Warring Triad. Once their life ends, they turn into magicite and can bestow power to those who posess it.

Aeons on the other hand are nothing more then dead peoples spirits transformed into powerful beasts.

Love the comic Brian. I had to chuckle with the names.

Organism X 04-28-2007 09:30 AM

Too...much...references...

.....my brain hurts....

roguepornstar 04-28-2007 10:43 AM

I love that fighters mind works. Technically it would be very easy to drown in a giant sealed dome filled with water which would technically make winning 50 games of drownball easy. That is it would if you could forgive the fact that its very difficult to "win" in drownball more than once...

Ytoabn 04-28-2007 10:47 AM

The entire concept of the sport blows my mind. The veterans of the sports are the ones that lose often and remember to get the hell out of the water. GAH.

excelfanboy 04-28-2007 10:54 AM

Budether - King of Beers, I may be a little old fashion but I prefer my King Steve Adams ;)

And also, I wonder what those two leagues could be planning... without the presence of the Guardian Forces no less!

henke37 04-28-2007 10:55 AM

I think I figured out how you can win drownball more then once.
This is an rpg, remember? And what can you do in rpgs if someone dies?
Here is my speculation about what happens:
Fighter meats up with the others just as they are doing something important(TM) and interrupts them by explaining how he won the drownball championship.(Preventing them from getting powerful more then 15mins)
And how he got the overpowered weapon(TM) with some help from a character that has not showed herself lately.
Brian, feel free to steel my idea, it is a hounour to have you steal it.

In FFXII, Espers can also be the Scions of Darkness created by the Occurians who were lead by Ultima (except for Zodiark, who was just so incredibly powerful that the gods fear it) in an uprising. They rebelled in a war against their creators, but despite their immense power were stricken down in defeat and banished to Ivalice, where they were eternally bound. To further their suffering, they were condemned to be tied with the Glyph of the Beast, forcing them to obey the orders of whoever posesses it.

Rocketlex 04-28-2007 03:54 PM

Espers are magical manifestations of plot devices required by the Square-Enix staff to move their particular fantasy epic forward.

32bit-RedMage 04-28-2007 04:18 PM

awesome !
Please Brian, make more drownball strips !

Fenris 04-28-2007 04:22 PM

Is this drownball or just plain drown?

'Cause I have yet to see the ball. Unless you drown in the ball. Which technically works.

Wonder what the other warriors of light are up to.

Spellingchek 04-28-2007 05:15 PM

What I want to know is how Fighter can be a newcomer and the rest of them not, because you can assume that everybody who plays this game dies their first time.

Alex the Son of Darko 04-28-2007 05:21 PM

theres too much Esper-Aeon talk in here...

BACK TO THE COMIC please

Really, it's fine. The past couple of posts have been on the comic, the comic references Espers and Aeons, etc..

Y'know, we mods do have PM boxes, you can send us a message asking if something is against the rules. I know I'd be happy to answer any questions. :)

Shirosen 04-28-2007 08:37 PM

I assum "NACR" is a reference to Nasir Gebelli.

I think it stands for "National Association for Chocobo Racing."

Skit = correct.

Flarecobra 04-29-2007 12:12 AM

NASCAR- National Association for Stock Car Racing.

NACR- National Association for Chocobo Racing.

Very nice Brian. Now did you just take the actual logo and chop it down to size and fixed the colors, or did you just make it from scratch?

I'll bet some of them are using illegal Phoenix Downs.

Veterans of the sport are the ones who actually survive each round of drownball, and are therefore considered the worse players.

Of course, everyone looks up to the greatest drownball player there ever was, Sparky McSpark Sparker. He set an amazing record for most wins in drownball: 2

Yes that's right, the first time he won he was only left brain damaged and in a coma. His coach bravely dragged his unconscious body to the next competition and flung him in, where Sparker gained his record setting 2nd victory. Because of his inspiring story, children everywhere drown themselves in pools just to be like Sparky.

EDIT:
Hehehe, I just thought of what the qualifications are for a coach in this sport.

paladinz_dude 04-29-2007 10:42 AM

Fighter's drowning again.. perhaps another visit from Swordopolis is next. Can't wait to see how he gets out of this "not so dramatic as it is funny" cliffhanger

Mirai Gen 04-29-2007 02:26 PM

Great episode. Classic Fighter thought process and the commentary was brilliantly done.

Ugainius 04-29-2007 02:41 PM

DID YOU KNOW: Drownball has a higher winner survivel rate then CAUSE jumping?

True True. But who was Brian references, FF6 or FFXII

Khael! 04-30-2007 10:36 AM

I have this silly mental image of Dr. Swordopolis bringing Fightar back the first couple of times, and then Fightar says how many rounds he is trying to 'win'.

The poor sword god's gonna end up forgetting to carry the two again. :D

bluestarultor 04-30-2007 11:33 AM

Actually, Fighter might just win this. He's been "dead" before and still survived. He'll just win a round, get dragged out, and then jump up as fine as ever after a few minutes.

After all, he survived an armoire crushing him, a blast of fire, 45 consecutive stab wounds, a giant's club, BM's constant abuse, almost drowning previously and falling from a great height, and possibly several things I'm forgetting.

We all know that fighter can bend the rules of both life and physics. How? I'm still trying to figure that one out.

By the way, that plate armor is sure to make him win, and die a horrible watery death. Let's hope there's no Siren down there.

Ircha 04-30-2007 01:15 PM

Cmon people, is it anybody here that actually belives fighter can win 50 games in a row? Can he even count above 3?
He propably thinks that this he will have succeeded if he drowns.

Awesome comic :)

Cyan60 04-30-2007 07:23 PM

Hold Me!

Im afraid say what the referance is but fighter is going to be dissapointed to see what weapon he gets:sweatdrop but the first one is for the crystal trophy

Fightar can count to fifty if he's counting in swords. But not if he's using his fingers or any other conventional means.

As long as the ref works from the sidelines, and not in the playing field (I highly doubt this is so), he should be able to keep score so Fightar doesn't have to.

Cyan60 05-03-2007 05:55 PM

I think i might be a coach. God I love my job!

In my avatar there is a picture of the soon to be the best drownball players ever.
Something tells me seymor is behind this.:whee:
