Simple, his armor gives him such an AC boost that it keeps most of the damage from the water drowning away so he actually has no chance of drowning (winning/losing)

Maybe its due to his experience with the armoir of invincibilty (and maybe the class change but who can say). You COULD say that when fighter got tired of lugging the armoir on his back and it collapsed upon him he was drowning beneath the wood. As you know this continued for several comics and as everyone knows the way to build resistance to something (or someone) is to constantly be bombarded by it(them). Fighter developed such a drowing resistance (illogical as it may sound) from being stuck under the armoir that he momentarily passed out from the awesomeness (his resistance was over 100%....it happens) and then came out the top due to cartoon physics. This often happens when the rules of reality are bent and or broken and logic has no place in the result. Because of his trial (dying underneath the armoir) he was subjected to a constant xp gain {another reason why he passed out} and lvled up furiously which is also another reason he probably didnt die).
Fighter's death resistance must be really high.
oh...and that is why he lost/won at drownball.....
Wow, that really got away from me....
