28 Weeks Later, or I pissed myself!

I just got back from seeing this movie, I expected to be disappointed and feel bad about spending my money and time on yet another crummy sequel, then I saw the openning scene. After my heart rate recovered I was stuck in rapt suspense waiting for the shit to hit the fan and they didn't hold back on anything. So my overall rating for the movie is...Fucking WOW!!

Is the transition from movie to movie plausible?

Demetrius 05-11-2007 03:45 PM

Incredibly so, they really had their bases covered on that, SPOILERS, do not read this unless you aren't seeing the movie!! The first scene opens up on a house of people that have survived the initial outbreak, long story short one guy gets away, he leaves his wife behind to get eaten. Time passes, the zombies all starve and die out. Now 28 months later the US military has cleared out a portion on London and people are beginning to return, the survivors meet up with people that managed to get out. One such group is the guy that left his wife behind and his kids who were away on a school trip when the outbreak happened. The kids break quaranteen zone to go back to their old house for a picture of their mother...and they find her there, still alive. She is a carrier, her husband gets in to see her kisses her and her saliva turns him, madness ensues. The whole thing was nuts, no punches were pulled and continuity wasn't trashed.

I was expecting this to be utter shit, but now you say it was really good, I don't know what to think. Can anyone else confirm that this film is indeed good? I want a second opinion.

ArlanKels 05-11-2007 07:13 PM

I have not seen it(And my sense of taste tends to differ wildly from most people I meet), but am happy to hear they at least have a coherent reason as toward why it continues.

Do you mind spoiling the end of the movie? I will not be seeing it whatsoever until it comes out on television so...

If you feel it's best to PM me the spoiler it's okay.

Oh, good, I thought it might suck. Then again I seem to always like zombie movies, and the first one was pretty decent.

I got a kick out of the TV commercial for this movie. If you watch it, you'll notice they never once show a zombie. If you haven't seen the first movie, you'd be completely in the dark that this movie has zombies in it. They just keep going, "What if it comes back" with some scenes of people running dramatically (not the zombie people, the regular people), a couple scenes of a helicopter, and a couple of army guys. It's really funny. I have the feeling they did it on purpose so people wouldn't know it's a zombie movie.

huh, I really didn't know what to think of this movie, but I think I'll go see it now. Is Cillian Murphy back or do they have all new ppl?

Demetrius 05-12-2007 10:46 AM

They have 3 people that originally turned down roles in the first movie, but other than that, all new folks.

Just got back from this.

I don't really know what to think. There were no happy moments in this entire movie. It was all "we're fucked" the entire time. I didn't like how they kept inserting cliche horror "jump" scenes in there; as far as I remember the first one never resorted to them. The outcome didn't really seem to matter this time (especially in lieu of the ending). And I can't say I liked that (the ending) at all. It felt to me like they ended it the way they did because they didn't know what to do with it. The only surviving characters vanish for no apparent reason (other than sequel set-up).

So yeah... Let's see, positive aspects...

The music was good. It had that post-rock feel similar to the first movie, though they kept playing that bit from the trailer over and over--I guess it's the "theme" (not that it isn't good). The larger budget was definately apparent. Cinematography had that hi-speed grainy video feel of the first with far better quality--no miniDV tapes here. (At the same time, it loses some of the indy charm of 28 Days; feels more Hollywood.) The acting was all pretty solid. You got to care for some characters, although I don't think anyone really lived long enough to get any decent character development... And it was a really good horror movie. I'm usually not too squeamish, but the eye gouge had me blanching. Really, a lot of horrific wince-worthy death in this one... The flat out running-for-your-life sequences were awesome, though.

Other than that, I don't really know what to say. I'm still unsure as to whether or not I enjoyed this one or not. It was like watching a 99 minute catastrophe/massacre that you paid $10.50 to see... The most painful part of the experience, actually. It was well shot, and well executed--if you'll excuse the terms--but it was also very, very depressing. Really, just... no glimmer of hope anywhere.

EDIT: And please, not "zombies". XP

I thought some of the plot elements were a little ill-conceived. For example: Robert Carlyle's character is able to get into a heavily armed military outpost's quarantine zone with his security pass he got by being an apartment caretaker. I liked the basic premise, but the execution seemed rushed and a bit flimsy. Also, I was disappointed that the kid got infected, by his dad, no less. That guy popped up more often than Nemesis in RE 2! Anyway, it was still pretty good, but unless you were a big fan of the first one you might wanna consider waiting until DVD to see it.
