Monitor to Meister: Fuck you.
Out of the blue, my monitor went into the black. First it displayed a site (scripturetext.com - I was looking up a Bible quote), then the entire display went darker, then it went black entirely. It doesn't even display the "cable not plugged in properly" note it usually does (even though it's always plugged in properly).
Maybe it's gonna clear itself up when I turn it on again, but while I'm on the other computer to investigate I might as well ask for help here. |
Have you tried plugging your computer into another monitor? That could help figure it out.
|
Sounds like something burned out. I'm no technician, but a little piece inside probably needs replacing. If it does lead to that, get a flatscreen monitor to replace it if you can. They're way better room-wise.
|
I don't have another monitor here, so that method is right out. The other computer is a notebook without any means of graphical input. I'll see if I can borrow one, but that might take a while.
The monitor gets power, too. It's only the display. The computer does seem to take one or two seconds longer to boot up, but that might as well be my imagination. None of the components is older than 1-1,5 years by the way. At least everything should still be covered by warranty. EDIT: What I could do is hook up the monitor to another output. I used to have an on-board graphics chip until I bought a card. I'm not sure if that output still works now that I have that card though, comments? |
Couldn't hurt- the only thing it would check though is if your card is burnt out.
Your best bet would be to borrow another computer to check. |
Oh, man. Good luck, Meister. My mega-monitor crapped out like this just the other week. Totaly black, dead. Only I could still get the "no signal" and the monitor's own menu and stuff to work, so this is clearly a different situation.

My monitor's starting to die on me too. After it goes into screen saver, which is totally black, it takes a while for it to come back and when it does, it's all flickery and white until I start threatening it. And occasionally, it will black out for a minute for no reason.
Damn art school supplies cutting into my budget for computer. |
I just don't have any luck with monitors. The monitor on my first computer - CRT - had a weird problem where the picture would become extremely narrow, as if you'd set it to the lowest width, but the setting itself didn't change at all. The only way to get him to display properly again was a good smackin' upside the housing in one specific spot. I perfected the technique in the time it took for the company to replace it.
This one seems to be pretty bust as not even the menu is coming up anymore. Fortunately it's still under warranty. Guess a trip to the store is in order. |
Did you try smacking it? I had a monitor that'd do that, and smacking it good on the side a few times made the picture pop up again, which suggested that something was loose in there.
It's not a permanent solution, but it buys a little time until you get a new monitor, at least. If it works, that is. |
For me, smacking things only solves the problem the first two or three times I do it. After that, whatever's loose in there is not likely to coincidentially bump back into just the right spot.
I'm better off shaking it, locating the loose sound, and opening the damn thing up to see what's loose. And where it goes. I probably shouldn't be doing this, but it works for all my small broken stuff. At least that way if I can't fix it, I can tell a technician exactly what my problem is. |
