Caffeine Makes The World Go Round

So today I was tired and blechy and not so happy.
Yet I had 9 hours before me at work of hard working(As we were going to have only a small sum of people show up).

So I grabbed a large iced coffee(With hazelnut syrup) and downed it.

A few hours later I was all O.O and couldn't stop moving or talking.

Is this the normal result of a double-caffeinated 32oz coffee+sugar intake for others?

And if you drink it a lot would you end up becoming "Accustomed" to it and subsequently not being affected by it as much?

Long-Haired Narcissist 06-18-2007 10:12 PM

When I rarely drink coffee, it gets me all bright eyed and bushy tailed.

Preturbed 06-18-2007 11:58 PM

Actually I think it slows me down a little. Does that make me ADD?

greed 06-19-2007 12:19 AM

Nah, I gots the ADD and it has the same effect on me as everyone else. Or it did, I drink it too often and now have a resistance, it takes multiple tablespoons of coffee grounds in the mix to effect me now, cola still has an effect though that's becuase of all the sugar. So yeah like most neural affecting chemicals, you can develop a resistance and even a dependency to caffeine, get someone who drinks it everyday for a few years to give it up, not quite cigs but it's noticeable, hell I notice it if I don't have any for a day or so.

Seil 06-19-2007 02:19 AM

Coffee in the morning is luverly. (^^) And it doesn't go too bad with smokes, either.

Coffee has caffeine, meaning that it gives you a boost of energy that doesn't run down for a bit. All those cola's and things that greed is drinking are fulla sugar, so after an hour or two, he'll start to feel very tired and wanting to crash.

Professor Smarmiarty 06-19-2007 04:43 AM

Chocolate provides me my caffeine. Huzzah!

Which is why I only drink little coke, mostly diet shit(fallen off the horse during exams though), and trying to get onto coffee. DIABEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeEEETEES scares me.

Eltargrim 06-19-2007 08:29 AM

Ah, 1,3,7-trimethyl-1H-purine-2,6(3H,7H)-dione, will people ever stop loving you?

Greed, that's why I only drink the diet shit. Because I need my fix, man!

Preturbed 06-19-2007 08:30 AM

Remember kids, coffee will only prevent

if you drink it black.

On topic, I do like some coffee in the mornings, usually when I have a nice chocolate Entenman's doughnut to dunk in it.

Dear lord, you never drink coffee and you started out with 32 ounces? Please tell me that's a typo and you meant 12. I drink coffee every day and I think the biggest amount I've ever downed was 20 ounces (at one shot, at any rate, I know I've drunk 32 ounces over the course of the day). Caffeine tends to really hit me sometimes, but other times it doesn't. If there's too much sugar in it, I can fall asleep almost right after drinking it. I refer to the coffee-sugar combination as double hit, double crash.

That used to be my only source of caffeine as well. Then I started working...in filing, and coffee was the only thing that would keep me from going on autopilot. One year for Lent I gave up coffee and chocolate, in essence giving up caffeine. Don't think I'll ever be trying that again.

Me too, and pretty much one whole side of my family has it. I'm enjoying drinking coffee with sugar in it while I still can!

Really?!? Where did you hear that? Also, of course, drinking coffee for the prevention of diabetes doesn't help you as much as, say, good diet and exercise, but it's a start.

greed 06-19-2007 08:52 AM

Hmm most I've ever downed in one sitting was half a litre of milk mixed with enough grounds to fill a litre stein, you leave it to sit and it dissolves eventually. Absolutely foul, but the power! THE POWAH!!!

I'm lucky with that, my family seems to only have deafness, hell we haven't even had heart attacks, but it's still a risk and not something I want to be a trendsetter in. Fallen off the wagon during exams though.:sweatdrop

Oh and the thing about only black preventing DIABBEEETEES is that fat causes it too, so milk ain't the best either.

adamark 06-19-2007 09:45 AM

I feel patriotic when I drink coffee. Cuz itz liek "take that, tea~!"

Coffee doesn't really make me hyper, it makes me pooper.

pochercoaster 06-19-2007 09:59 AM

I get a high and then a low form coffee. Drank three cups the other day at a breakfast restaurant while waiting 40 minutes for them to serve me. XD It usually takes half an hour or so before it starts to have an effect on me. Then my ability to concentrate disappears.

I never feel affected by sodas, though, and I don't drink them regularly.

Seil 06-19-2007 10:21 AM

Check this out!

Ex. 68471 06-19-2007 11:26 AM

I personally like to fry my nerves with insane amounts of caffein and sugar. At the same time. For example, once I mixed a 16oz. of coffee with 16oz. of root beer. I'm still not sure if that fire was caused by me, or my friend who had the same thing except with some Dr. Pepper mixed in as well.
No, I didn't really cause a fire. But I did drink that mixture once. And so did my friend.

Loyal 06-19-2007 01:42 PM

Sour Skittles is my coffee.

PyrosNine 06-19-2007 02:03 PM

I drinks the Sundrop for my caffeine, and when I am without it I tend to sleep all day or just laze around. POS probably knows what it is.

It has 65mg of caffeine per can and also contains orange juice, and is very popular as a morning drink in North Carolina, although we do enjoy our home made Sprite-Orange juice concoctions as well.

Sometimes I've wondered if I have diabetes or something from a strong lifestyle of sugar ingesting, because sometimes when I'm low on sugar my hands start to shake or I'll have trouble mentally functioning until I eat something usually very high in sugar. I drink pure sugar water when there's no soda, and have poured a half cup of the sweet stuff in my coffee and tea.

And yet, I am not visibly a very active or hyperactive person, even being marked down in a one word description contest as "Calm".

Gir, that fire was probably caused by me because I don't need caffeine to burn things. Only wood, a match, and a strong pair of legs to escape Smokey the Bear.

Redneck Scientist 06-19-2007 02:23 PM

He'll maul your ass.

On topic, I may be young, but I still can't function without coffee. I have an addiction.

ArlanKels 06-19-2007 02:28 PM

yes I drank 32oz. no typo.

The coffee we make is by the pot, and each pot can produce I think 3 32oz? And we use double the normal amount of grounds for the Iced Coffee(So double caffeinated yes?).

Jeneralissimo 06-19-2007 03:02 PM

I believe the term for that is double-brewed. I wouldn't go so far as to say double-caffeinated. They use double grounds so that even with the ice there will be the same amount of caffeine as in normal hot coffee.

I think he was referring to the part that if you don't drink it black, then it tends to have sugar in it, which tends to... well, you know. It's really only preventative in the sense that you're drinking something that has caffeine that isn't loaded with sugar.

Thank you. I thought the lolcat was a dead giveaway that I wasn't seriously suggesting coffee as a preventative medication. I guess some people take everything seriously.

Bobbey 06-19-2007 05:37 PM

I've been trying to drink coffee for the last two years or so, but it just never gives: it's disgusting to me. On the other hand, I am able to drink Tim Horton's Ice Cappucino with no problem, because I know that there's a shitload of sugar in there. The first time I drank one though, I became very hyper and wouldn't stop shaking and talking, and this was only a small ice cap too. My friends found me very entertaining that day.
Now, I can drink a medium one with not much problem, but if I don't drink them often enough, I start shaking again.

Moral of this story: I'm better off with chocolate, like Barrel.

Yep! Over time you can become tolerant to the amount of caffeine you're taking in, though you may not notice it over such long periods.

However, if you all of a sudden stopped drinking coffee, or soda, or whatever it is that you're having with caffeine, you'd sure as hell notice the headaches, withdrawal symptoms, etc.

Oh oh oh! Interesting side note, caffeine also helps speed up and enhance the efficacy of drugs. So, if you have a headache or something, it may help to down a cup o' coffee with that Tylenol.

The more you know.

Preturbed 06-19-2007 08:15 PM

I once went 6 months without caffiene, just to see if I could do it. Then I went to see SwimFan and got dark chocolate covered coffee beans as a snack. I was flippin out man! Oh my god, those were bad times.

betachris_00 06-19-2007 08:34 PM

I don't think anything can have the effect on me that caffeine used to have. It's gotten to the point that I'll drink two of those little five hour energy shots mixed with coffee and a jamocha shake, and follow it up with a mountain dew for good measure, and that'll keep me going for a 6-9 hour shift.

At work, they like to joke that my urine is radioactive now.

Xaeta 06-19-2007 09:12 PM

I'm proud to say I'm a caffine addict.
Coffee, Mountain Dew, Redbull, MONSTER, you name it.

We have some things that make life worse with caffine; we have chocolates that have 70-86% pure Coacoa - it's like caffine in Kit-Kat form!!!

Toast 06-19-2007 09:46 PM

geez... am I the only person here who isn't addicted to caffeine? Generally, the only time I get caffeine is when I can't get caffeine free drinks.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'd much rather not have my dopamine levels bouncing back and forth every time I need a caffeine fix.

If you're drinking that much caffeine, you might as well find a drug dealer that sells speed instead.
Just joking with ya.
Personally I prefer tea to anything else. It has just enough caffeine to keep my mind sharp withou making me hyper.

Well, Fencer could tell you I tend to sound serious all the time, even when I'm not, which, in this case, I totally wasn't.

Fifthfiend 06-20-2007 12:07 PM

Hahahaha, way to take everything seriously, church-face.

42PETUNIAS 06-21-2007 10:05 PM

While coffee is good, it's energy drinks that really get me going, Monster being the best. A Low-Carb Monster solves all my problems, I personally like the taste more than the one with more sugar.

bananarama 06-22-2007 03:44 AM

I can't stand energy drinks. I never drink more than two (small) cups of coffee. So the only way I usually get my caffiene fix is through chocolate or soda. I guess that makes me a weenie, huh? :(

MasterOfMagic 06-22-2007 03:59 AM

My first cup of coffee tasted awesome. Someone else got it for me, mixing in the creamer and such. All attempts at replicating that have failed miserably. I really needed some caffiene when I was getting up at 4:30/5 in the morning to work at this gas station. But, I just couldn't bring myself to down a cup.

It makes me sad. I want that taste agian...

You are not alone on this Path to Tea Enlightnment!

Literally. I've never sampled coffee; closest I ever got was to drinking a cappucino. But I've had a lot of tea the past 4 years.

Probably something to do with the fact that I've been attending a private high school, in which 95% of the teachers were of Turkish origin. And Turkish people sure love their tea.

Mr. Viewtiful 06-22-2007 05:01 AM

I know some serial Pepsi addicts around where I live. One time I got them the caffeine free variety...

...it didn't go over well at all.

By the way, if anyone is going to BYU in the near fututure, they don't sell caffeinated beverages on-campus...you have been warned...

Those crazy mormons and their lack of artificial energy enhancers.

That does stand for Brigham Young Uni, right?

I drink tea, now occasionally drink coffee but still prefer hot cocoa with an extra cup of sugar included within for a hot drink.

My personal favorite type of tea is Earl grey, although this one citrus-raspberry kind my mom buys somewhere that I've yet to find is great with lots of sugar.

SUGAR!

Also, the only withdrawal I have ever noticed, was that during the last year, I drank the least amount of caffeine ever, and suffered terrible angst and depression.

Whether it was my depression that caused me to not drink caffeine or my not drinking caffeine that caused my depression is up for grabs, though admittedly another factor was my sister spawning and hurling my world upside down and into a gutter.

But now, I buy Sundrop whenever I have a chance, and I am happy! Also, the baby is cute, but I'm not allowed to give her sugar or caffeine.

neyo the king 06-22-2007 05:42 PM

Eh, I've just started on the road to coffee-lightenment!

I've had a cup here or there, I think I've had maybe 5 in my lifetime, maybe about 15, counting chilled coffee drinks, and I have to say that I was a bit disappointed with the results.

Probably due to my excessive drinking of soda and tea...

Shower Shock Soap!
Shower Shock Body Wash!
Spazzstick Lip Balm!

Yeah. It's not that they don't allow caffeine on-compus per se, it's just that they don't sell it.

It's also the only place where I've gotten Coke products at a Taco Bell on-campus (all caffeine-free, of course).

Man, I should've started up a Mountain Dew black market when I was still in the dorms, I could've made some serious cash on that...
