Red Mage's Morality

Three of the four light warriors are pretty easy to classify, morality wise: Thief is amoral, Black Mage is immoral, and Fighter is technically moral (But not very good at it).

Red Mage is a bit trickier. On one hand, he is the only one apart from Fighter who actually remembers that they are on a quest to save the world, and isn't really put off by the fact. That could just be for the XP, however. He also participates in a crime spree (Again, perhaps just for the XP), but he actually argues against murder, so he probably isn't totally amoral.

So, where does he fit on the morality meter?

I'd say he's as versatile as possible--even in morality. But it's really hard to determine anything about him because his role in the plotline is very unclear and his history is rarely explored. Hell, we still don't even know if Megahedron is real. (But then again, it took like 5 years to clear up episode 81.)

Another good question about RM would be his homeland. We know the following:
Corneria: BM / Fighter / Garland / Sara / King Steve / maybe Bikke / Onion Kid?
Elfland: Thief / King Elf / Astos / Drizz'l
Melmond: I guess Vilbert
Order of the White Mages: WM I would think
The mountain stronghold a little further to the east: BB

Maybe he just grew up in the Order of the Red Mages?

Red Mage is as moral as he remembers to be at any given moment. He's that one guy in your RPG group who plays the game to see what he can get away with. He picks an alignment, he's probably even Good, and every time he's reminded of the main quest he plays it rather well. However, as soon as he gets a chance to make completely insane plans or tamper with the laws of nature or man, he's on it like something that's on something else a lot.

The XP prominently feature in his motivation, too. He may well argue against murder, but if the DM puts those guards up against him, they have to be enemies (=XP source), right? Works for him.

Damn, this has even more to do with metagaming than I thought.

Meister has hit the red flashing core.

Well gee thanks Brian, way to kill the thread. I mean c'mon, that was like...stepping on an anthill or something.

I knew that half-finished English degree had to be good for something one day.

So basically it's all about the XP for him right?

Deck Knight 06-26-2007 12:18 AM

The primary motivating force of each LW:

Thief: Cashola
RM: XP
Black Mage: Power
Fighter: Swords! And possibly goodness and right. Sometimes.

White Mage at this point is little more than a counterpart for BM. She's basically just the idealist to BM's realist. While BM knows right and wrong, he doesn't care. WM's understanding of right and wrong seems weaker. Sure, she dresses it up in nicer terms and platitudes, but she never really questions what she believes.

What is notable is that while she's still an idealist, BM's cold, calculated realism is starting to rub off on her.

Black Belt is... dead.

I doubt RM HAS any morality (Although not in the Theif or BM way). In more of a, 'to have one would tie me down and make me less versatile' way.
