the simpsons
its a awsome show.i never missed a episode.i watched all 400.
post what you think :bmage: |
i think they've gone downhill so much at this point that it's depressing to watch. the beginning of the end was when conan obrien left the writing crew. it was predictable and boring long ago and should have probably been canceled about 3 or 4 seasons ago. fox has publicly stated that they're going to be running the show as long as they're profiting one red cent. i just wish they had taken that stance with futurama and firefly.

Actually, pseudo-recently, it's been getting better.
I don't know why, but I enjoy it more atleast. |
I've heard a lot of people say it's gotten better recently, but I'm afraid to check it myself. I stopped watching around season eleven, but tuned in every once and a while and had to turn it off before the episode ended. It was just so depressing.
It's not like it was in top form during seasons 8-10, but at least it was watchable. |
I turned to it last night, and it was a new episode. Abe Simpson and Selma were married. I couldn't decide if this entire episode wasa subtle reference to Troy McClure's Simpson Family Outakes from Season 6 where they mentioning such an event happening "in the next season" or if that's what they've come to. I think it's the latter. So they've reached the point where the storylines they mocked as being signs of them jumping the shark in the early seasons are being seriously presented. Not long now til Bart finds his long lost multicultural triplets and Homer gets a wishmaking alien.
In the early seasons it was one of the best televison shows ever. Now I can't even watch it. |
I still love the show, I really fail to see where people are getting that it went downhill.
|
I watch it whenever I can, and I beleive the Abe-Selma marriage was more or less making fun of homer while creating some kind of oedipus complex with Homer in that if his dad and Selma get married, that makes Marge his father's Sister in law. Not to mention theres been alot of intergenerational marriages lately in society so its also referencing that.
So in all, I think the Simpsons are starting to deal more with Social Issues more than it did in its earlier seasons. |
About dealing with social issues, that seems to be on the rise since South Park started doing it.
The very first episodes of the Simpsons dealt with family issues and kinda seemed like a relic from the Flintstones era, but it grew away from that quickly as Homer became less competant and the family dynamic changed profoundly. I do really think it's past it's prime, though I can't say Family Guy is much better as a replacement. Who knows if I know what I'm talking about, I stopped watching TV quite a long time ago. |

As the writing staffs change out, there are bound to be changes in the way the show is handled. It seems like this one is shifting back into a better area, though it's very doubtful it will get back to the point it was at in the 5th season. But maybe it will be good again. |
I'm of the opinion that Simpsons is like the old family dog. Sure, it still does a bunch of tricks well, but you just know that it hurts like hell to move and they're five seconds away from dropping dead.
