Code of the Paladin - Story Ideas

So I was thinking of writing a darker, near depressing story about a single Paladin and his adventures in a world where the Paladin Order was slowly being destroyed.

The whole plot would be that the Paladin Order had become the unofficial police for all the different nations in the world, and that a spreading evil was causing them to overstretch their bounds. The order would be getting systematically wiped out. And their code of protecting the innocent and upholding justice and righteousness is causing it.

So basically, the Code of the Paladin is causing the death of the Paladin Order, and the whole story would be about a young Paladin and his nearly futile efforts to save his Order, and keep the evil from destroying a fragile Alliance between the nations. An Alliance the Order itself established and has painstakingly maintained.

It will probably be an E-novel, posted on a site and updated bi-weekly (Twice a week).

Any ideas, comments, suggestions, critiques?

Edit: I've also considered a roleplay about it, but I don't know about that.

Sounds like an awesome idea. One of the best story-hours I've ever read was Lady Despina's Virtue. It followed the adventure of a Paladin named Eadric and his party who had gotten caught up in a split in the Paldin order. Basically an undercover succubus who was sent to to infiltrate the Paladin order and kill Eadric. As it so happens though the succubus genuinely falls in love with Eadric and reveals her true form to him and claims to have converted her alliances and her faith. Eadric is caught in an troubling situation, does he slay the Demon who are inherently Chaotic-Evil and reside in the Abyss OR does he give her a chance at redemption and believe her word? Unfortunately this one instance brings a massive split in the Paladin order between those Paladins who are more Lawful-GOOD and those who are more LAWFUL-Good.

I would definitely be interested in reading the story based around the Paladin you mentioned. Unfortunately in D&D Paladins are so easily screwed over by evil DMs but I still very much enjoy the virtues they uphold themselves to.

In most of my fantasy I often end up falling to resort to using paladins in just about every goddamn story I write. Their constant struggle of doing right and keeping their ego in check is just too interesting to pass up.

I'll read it.

I'll probably right a chapter or 2 here on NPF while looking into setting up a website. I'll have to find a friend who can make me a spiffy site, as I usually just use some crappy pre-genning program that just let's drag pictures, etc, than converts the code.

I doubt I even have -that- program anymore.... anywho.. I'll try writing up an introduction or some sort today... might be up in a few hours.. not sure yet.

Why not use Parker Comics? You could get set up pretty easily there.

Code of Paladin - Prologue

Here's the prologue for what might become an E-Novel.

Josiah brought his horse to a slow march, taking in the scene before him. The sun cast a sorrow-filled gaze on the battlefield in front of the young Paladin. Feeling a slight tug on the reins, Josiah's horse stopped fully. The armored man dismounted and began to walk amongst the field of corpses.

As far as he could see in the valley, bodies lay stiff and lifeless in the afternoon. Smoldering fires dotted the landscape, remnants of the past day's battle. The young man removed his armored helmet, bowing his head to say a prayer for the departed dead. Upon completion he began to move into the battlefield, blood-soaked grass clinging to his boots with every step.

As he trudged through the corpses, a glittering piece of metal caught his eye. The Paladin leaned down to pick it up. Holding it up in view of the sunlight, he examined the item. A bent and damaged silver cross attached to a bloodsoaked chain. He glanced down to a similar looking chain wrapped tightly around his wrist. Looking down he glanced upon the fallen body of one of his order.

Josiah glanced around, able to spot a few dozen other Paladins on the ground. He shook his head again. By the end of his patrol on the field, he counted a total of one-hundred and thirteen dead Paladins. Multiple times he knelt down next to bodies of those he recognized and added a few words of parting with the person. After nearly a full day of walking amidst the fallen, he made his way back to his horse, his footsteps long and heavy.

A large pack strapped to his back bulged under the weight of the dead Paladins' crosses. Sacred to both sides, Paladin crosses were highly sought after. For that reason, the Order went to great lengths to ensure their holy emblems never reached the hands of thieves, crooks, or anyone else.

He strapped the pack to his saddle and re-mounted his horse. Squeezing slightly on the animal's sides, he started his journey back. He glanced once more and the battlefield, sorrow-filled eyes scanning the dead. Slowly he turned his horse around and began to set distance between him and the battlefield. Behind him, various insects began to gather and perform their own inspection of the corpses.

Parker Comics

Thats where Mirai and I host our comics. PM Nikose about it as I can't offer his site around.

Tyrazial 06-26-2007 06:19 PM

*nods* After looking at it, it seems tailored more to comics than novels. But I shall talk to Nikose and see what happens. :)

The other reason I have thought about getting my own domain is the fact I actually want to write up multiple E-Novels, and would be able to do better with a site I owned and could manipulate at my leisure.

Mirai Gen 07-02-2007 03:06 AM

Well Parker Comics right now is just hosting whatever we feel like. As of now, it pertains to projects that NPFers need host space on, and since Nikose is doing it for free and hoping that one day it'll pay off, it's a good time to join the club.

Tyrazial 07-03-2007 12:30 PM

Yar. I was chatting to Nikose about it and have been trying to find a good archival type program to possibly implement. I am a horrid web programmer... >.<
