looking for an easily modifiable non-GURPS RPG system
the title of the thread says it all. i'm currently looking for a decent (preferrably free) RPG gaming system (that isn't GURPS) for a modern/near future fantasy setting (i'd say something like shadowrun but without the cybernetic stuff, but the actual magic system in shadowrun makes my head hurt.
I wasn't sure if this was the section to post this in, but it seemed the closest any ideas? |
Something like...d20 Modern?
Their SRDs are free, but some of the supplements are not. |
naw, D20 modern is unfortunately out of the question. i took a look at it before i posted here, and it seemed to not be what i was looking for
|
Eden Studio's Witchcraft or White Wolf's World of Darkness/Mage: the Ascension are both sort of like that.
|
I decided on what i want to use for this. White Wolf made a game in the past called "Street Fighter the storytelling game" and with a little bit of modification, it will allow me to do what I want with this game. i'm going to post an interest thread to see if there's anyone interested in playing, it won't be forum based, but use an online java based program that will allow for dice rolling, a visual/tactical map, and also allows for text chat.

Street Fighter the Storytelling game?
That sounds so delightfully retro. Which edition is it, if you don't mind me asking? And why not GURPS? |
i just don't like gurps, that's all i'm predjudiced against it by an ass of a gm from the one and only time i tried playing it.
the Streetfighter storytelling game is a single edition game, they never did a reprint, you can find out a bit of information about it on the net, but the game itself is about 14 years old |
have you checked out Shadowrun 4th ed? makes alot of refinements over the previous systems, alot easier to deal with. other than that...
Legend of the Five Rings has a pretty interesting d10 system, very flexable. modifies how many dice you roll, how many of those you keep, and what your target number is. only played with the L5R system a few times, but combat was pretty open and made it easy to improvize. |
GURPS is a good system, but it takes a couple of days to learn.
I would give it another chance, if you can find someone else who plays it. The only reason I don't like whitewolf (At least the current ed.) is that no matter how many ranks you have in something, you still have the same chance to succeed or fail. And to me, that just seems like a poor system to play with anyone who has bad luck whatsoever. I mean, hell, you'd think 17 ranks in something would be enough to accomplish a simple task, but nope, I failed. I do like their settings and ideas, but they're overall too complex for me. Just having to decide your faction and whatnot is a pain in the ass sometimes. I've been meaning to give Shadowrun a look. What kind of system does it use? |
