Fallout 2 was one of the greatest games of all time.

If you have not played that glorious pinnacle of achievement then do yourself a fucking favor and buy it now before you die and descend to hell and your first thought upon reaching Satan's gates is "Damn, I probably would have gone to heaven if I was just smart enough to play Fallout 2."

Then of course Satan himself will confirm to you that yes, God in fact did make playing Fallout 2 a preconditionality for reaching heaven and rejoicing with the angels. Because if you haven't played Fallout 2 you have no idea what eternal bliss is like.

You think I'm making some glaring overstatements but Fallout 2 is just that good. Really it's sad that in the decade after its release no one else seems to have thought that a game can have both a phenomenal storyline and also allow the title character to be almost anyone and do almost anything.

Well, assuming you CAN buy Fallout 2.

You'd be better off finding it through illegitimate means anyway. I mean, sure, it's wrong. But I'm very very sure that there's a pretty messed up secondary market for Fallout games, and I doubt you want to get your foot stained in that shit.

I doubt you can even install Fallout without doing some real Windows XP sidestepping.

I found out a bit ago that it's really easy to get your computer to read old games. I got "Get Medieval," "Return to Zork" and "Quest for Glory V" this way.

In C Drive, go to the Windows folder and find a file called "autoexec.nt" and make a copy of it somewhere safe. Then, open it in notepad, and delete the little bit at the top that states that Windows 95 CD's are not executable - it should be at the very top. Then, re-try the CD. If it doesn't work, simple delete the file and replace it with your back-up.

I did it, and now everything still works fine - and I can play my old PC games! Whoo!

Hm I'm sort of hopeful about this one, haven't played the older ones and from what I've heard it isn't gonna be too much like them. Which sucks for old Fallout fanboys but luckily I'm not one of them. What it does sound like is Oblivion with guns, but where they actually give your actions some consequences and have a decent story. Also the small number of NPCs suggests they'll work on them being actual indivduals. Which sounds good. Also sounds like combat is gonna be pretty fun.

Of course this is Bethesda, they're pretty much the least trustworthy company as far as hype goes short of Peter Molyneux.

Hey, would that trick work for games that say they won't work on Windows NT(I have XP, but they think it's NT)?

Seil 07-05-2007 03:32 AM

Iuhnno - I put in my CD's and kept getting the same message. (Something like "autoexec.nt is not executable blah, blah, blah) I actually found the autoexec.nt file and opened it - it selected Notepad as the program to open under - and it had, in capital letters at the top, this bit about not allowing older games to work. So I made a copy of the file, deleted the bit about older game discs should not be read, and everything's workin' fine now.

If my computer explodes, I'll give you a call.

A quick google search comes up with...

No Mutants Allowed!

This was how I installed Fallout 1 and 2 all those six months ago. Totally worth it.

I just find it funny I sat and shot the living crap out of Dogmeat since I didn't know he was a party member. Damn, once I found that out, I went back and got him. He's so crucial.

Seil 07-05-2007 04:51 AM

All I know about Fallout, I learned from this.

Mirai Gen 07-05-2007 05:08 AM

Oh well then let's just make the party complete!

With this link! And this one!
