Brian FF7 rant

I remember reading a rant by Brain about FF7 and how it was just some crazed hype and I need it to educate some dumb kids who play a mmorpg with me.

They're still saying that FF7 is a great game with a great story even after reading all this...

I know they're just being assholes to try to make me go mad but I can't help it... I need the winning argument... I need Brian's help!

If we're talking about the games' story, I feel compelled to add this.

Ha ha ha ha. So very true. Even FF6 was fairly predicatable but I still found it damn exciting to play. I found final fantasy 7 a little boring after a while.

Eh, virtually any RPG is similar if you just siimplify the plot a bit. That little lump of text is dumbing down and ignoring the key details that made FF6 and FF7 different, though I do see the more overt similarities between the two games.

My own personal qualms with FF7 was that in some ways, it was a much simpler game in terms of both battle and how characters other than the main character had their personal stories developed, and also lacked some of the depth of the previous game.

BTW, an example of how a plot can be dumbed down and be universal:

Along the way s/he makes new friends and becomes more powerful, but upon learning of his/her past, s/he becomes unsure of him/herself, especially after learning of the connection s/he holds with the main villain. After some support from friends and gaining even more power, the hero defeats the villain (which also defeats the regime) and immediately has to leave because the place is going to explode. The hero survives, and while there may be more trouble in sequels and spin offs, generally the day has been saved for good.

I can't let this thread go by without mentioning:

The Grand List Of Console Role Playing Game Clichés.

Truly worth a read. (Although most of you may have already read it.)

For what it's worth during your argument, here's a good long read about FF7 for ya.

I like FF7.
However I don't care greatly for the characters. Except Barret.

Because he's my role model. In a few years I won't have two hands, I'll have and a hand a gun-hand. And my gun-hand will shoot taffy at people. Because taffy rules.

Believe it when I see it. :p

Pfft.
That's nothing compared to FF8.
I knew a guy who FELL ASLEEP on the final boss fight and won it while asleep due to having fallen face-first on the controller.

Azisien 07-03-2007 10:02 PM

Well, FF8 I can believe it. I definitely got through that game with just Attack.
