Changed: A New World. Interest and sign ups.

It was to be a most abnormal day on a small mid western university. The sun shined brightly high in the sky one moment and the next choking darkness descended. Those in classes without windows were alerted to the sudden change in their lives by the waves of nausea that hit each and every person, causing some to empty their stomachs while others just writhed with extreme discomfort.

Though it seemed like an eternity the darkness lifted within minutes and a new sky spread out over the campus, a sun much closer towards the horizon than it had been minutes before. The university’s population had only seconds to chatter in confusion before the next stage of the transition hit.

Fully half of the professors, students, and other personnel who were still just barely getting over the retreating sickness found their bodies violated once more. Some felt extreme pain, others pleasure, still others simply felt the unsettling sensation of their bones reshaping, their skin stretching, and their organs rearranging within their bodies.

Chaos reigned that day.

This is a role play idea that’s been kicking around in my head for a while. Essentially, a university campus and a bit of the surrounding town get transported directly into a fantasy world (a la Grantville). Transitioning into this world caused half of the population to be changed into various familiar fantasy races..

There’s a lot of room for some fun here. The campus will have to defend itself from without from beasts and eventually other denizens of this world while also dealing with the changed within its own population not to mention just surviving without all the infrastructure that supported the university before the transition.

This will be a free form RP. I’ll set up the situations and control the npc’s while your characters react as you will. When action happens you’ll generally write how specific enemies attack and you fight back (I’ll give some indication of how the enemies behave). At some points I will take control of the enemies and we’ll go back and forth. This is mostly for some fun action writing and such.

Role play’s particularly important obviously. I think there is a lot of room for character development and complexity as regular college students deal with suddenly looking like a monster or having to fight the desire to drink the blood of their fellow humans.

I’m looking for 5 or 6 people. If there’s more people than that who want to participate I can set up another thread. The two groups will just start in different places within the campus.

Some of the mechanics of the changed:

Most changed are simply transformed into another body but still maintain their own mind for the most part. They’ll have to contend with that body’s natural urges and inclinations, for some that won’t be much of a problem. Elves, dwarves, centaurs won’t have any real differences other than food preferences, maybe suddenly preferring outdoors or enclosed spaces than before. People changed into demons will be more violent and quick to anger but they can fight these urges. Those turned into angels will become calmer and more peaceful. Minotaurs will have anger problems and an intelligence loss.

A small percentage of changed are inhabited by the souls of the person they’ve been changed into. A regular Joe college student may find he now has to contend with the memories and personality of a foppish elvish lord. Or Joe’s personality may be completely dominated by the elf. Those that have been ensouled have access to all the skills of that person even if only a wisp of that creature’s personality is present.

You can play a human character. This may be an advantage later on when racism, fear, and distrust run rampant across the campus. If you play a human character, I’ll also give you the option of being magic sensitive. In the beginning, you’ll be able to cause accidental magic. Nothing too powerful but enough to occasionally defend yourself from normal enemies.

Here’s a list of races that people are being changed to. If you have another fantasy race in mind, give me your idea and I’ll see if it’ll work.

Dragon (only one person will be changed and that’s a npc)
Gargoyle (Turned to stone during day, obviously)
Vampire (all of the classic weaknesses and strengths)
Elf (beautiful…if you were fat and ugly you’ve just been vaulted into supermodel status…somewhat stronger than humans, faster, more agile)
Dwarf (Um…I hope you weren’t model before cause this is going to damage your psyche a lot)
Centaur
Demon
Angel
Naga
Medusa (this one would be interesting…I suppose you’d have to be blindfolded the whole time)
Mermaid/man (unless you want to spend your entire time in an Olympic swimming pool…probably not a good idea)
Fairy
Gremlin
Minotaur
Werewolf( other than a very strange sensation during the transition you wouldn’t realize you were one till the full moon in a couple of days)

So any takers? I want fairly in depth descriptions of your character’s backstory and personality certainly not a novel but enough for me to know you’ll be able to roleplay these characters effectively.

Thanks

Thats an interesting idea and I'd probably give it a shot but I'm in three RPs as it is and my rule is no more than three. But good luck. If you run it again at some point I'll be sure to join.

General interest given, but I too am now involved in two other RP's. It does look to be really fun though. I'll get back to you on this maybe later today, more likely tomorrow.

Can I be a MindFlayer?

PrinceRoger 07-04-2007 04:48 PM

Mintaro, Zilla,
Thanks for the interest. I’m glad others liked my ideas.

Marinan,
Hmmm…mindflayer’s tough. He has the same sort of problems of a vampire but without any way of concealing his nature. Not to mention he has to kill to eat unlike the vampire that can get his sustenance without harming someone too much. Plus there are going to be plenty of D&Ders on the campus who know exactly what a mindflayer is. In the sort of atmosphere that’s going to descend after this calamity I see only two real options for a person turned mindflayer: Shot and killed immediately or captured, locked up, and starved to death.

Then again if he has friends who are willing to hide and protect him…that might be interesting. And there will be beasts attacking the campus from without. If he could live off those brains…. Of course, mindflayers live off the brains of sentient creatures but maybe that could be just their preference and they can make do with that of beasts.

I’m leaning towards allowing it just because all the story potential it has. Just realize you’ll have these restrictions and your character’s death may be inevitable in the long run.

Another thing is I won’t allow you to be completely ensouled. All that would happen in that case is you start blasting people with your psionics and eating brains left and right. I’d allow him to have a part of the original mindflayer’s soul for the internal battle but being completely human minded might be best as you'd think even part of an Illithid's mind would be able to easily dominate.

sense I literally have two monsters manuals right to my right I'll put up some more info on mind flayers (damn i'm a nerd)

AD&D: Mind flayers also have an extreme distaste for Sunlight as vampires do.

"A mind flayer can also use the following arcane powers, once per round, as a 7th level mage: Suggestion, Charm person, charm monster, esp, levitate, astral projection, and plane shift. All saving throws against these powers are made at a -4, due to the creature's mental prowess."

I like that one much more than the 3rd edition version. So I think a mind flayer could actually do ok on its own. Assuming they are able to start making slaves quickly.

Hm. If I was friends with someone that had magic, I would be able to eat indefinately, wouldn't I? They could just clone a brain. Or I could learn how to clone people, which we can do now with our technology, and then eat all I want?

Edit- Actually, Can you AIM me? I'm ARCHDUKEOF562026@AOL.com

Hm......tempting...

Plus, who can resist a cute lamia in a schoolgirl outfit?

Marinan 07-04-2007 05:53 PM

Name:There is no Jason, only Kool.
Age:17 years old
Gender: Male'
Race:Human/Illithid
Ensoulded or Not: Half-Ensouled.

Bio: He was an average student for years. From Elementary School up to present day. He was pretty intelligent, but he felt as if nothing was really challenging him at all. He didn't get credit for things he did, and got credit for the bad things others did.

He never enjoyed being bullied back in the old days. Nowadays he is in top physical shape, and bench pressed. No one could tell his intellectual prowess with things he never bothered to exersize. In fact, he never had a girl friend either. He did have a short three year relationship with a girl he tried to make girlfriend of, but she turned out to not be "a nice person."(You should know what that means.)

Life seemed to be wasting away, no job, no girl friend, not even good grades, he just wasted his time playing video games or bench pressing. He played a wicked game Romance of the Three Kingdoms, but other than that, not much brain activity occured beyond his use of his bodily functions.
