Dancing

Dancing, moving to music, shaking one's groove thing.
Most people have done it atleast once, some hate it, others can't live without it.
Where do you stand on the rhythmic swayings of dance?
And the non-rhythmic swayings aswell for that matter.

Personally I love dancing, although I'm terrible at anything except ballroom dancing. Going out to the club dancefloor is fun, until I realize I probably look like a parody of a boyband video, or worse.

Azisien 07-30-2007 05:33 PM

I am not proficient in the art of dance, and I only willingly perform two forms, under strict conditions.

1) At a club dancefloor.*
2) Slow dance.**

*Tipsy or full-on drunk, with members of the opposite sex. Helps if said members are also visually pleasing.
**With member of the opposite sex. Said member must be visually pleasing.

Satan's Onion 07-30-2007 10:43 PM

Even though I am a fatty fat fat MacFatass O'Fattyfat, I do enjoy shaking my overlarge thang on the dance floor when I get the opportunity to do so. But, to my unending regret, I almost never get that opportunity these days...

Seil 07-30-2007 10:47 PM

I can "do the monkey," and slow dance. I also know how to tango - just... not well.

P-Sleazy 07-30-2007 10:52 PM

Give me a me a few shots and a beer or two, just enough to "find the courage", and I'll be out there on that dance floor doing all kinds of shit. But until that point comes, don't bother looking for me anywhere else but the table.

I found this out at my sisters wedding. I'm actually pretty good once I "find the courage" to get onto that dance floor. Kept getting pestered by people, Girls, Girls MY age no less, to dance with em. They weren't the fugly kind either. I am SOOO Shallow.

Crodevillian Team 07-30-2007 11:27 PM

In Japan, I was at the clubs every Friday, Saturday, and occasionally Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. It doesn't get much better than drum and bass on a Friday night. If ever you go to Tokyo, check out Club Air and Club Womb. They are fantastic.

Teal Mage 07-31-2007 12:34 AM

I personally love dancing, albeit I don't know any formal dances (wouldn't mind learning someday but til then it matters little). It's the major reason I look forward to weddings now.

I've been told I dance well, so that might be the reason I like it so much. Of course the whole combo of music and movement is just fun on it's own.

ska_ness42 07-31-2007 12:49 AM

dancing was never a biggie for me at weddings and stuff, but (apparently, I had too much to drink to remember) I can dance. enough to get the desirable kind of attention. I don't really want to think about it now that I'm sober though.

adamark 07-31-2007 01:56 AM

Dancing is a vertical expression of a horizontal desire. I love to dance, especially with a beautiful young lady.

betachris_00 07-31-2007 03:26 AM

I've always wanted to learn how to do the ballroom dancing thing, but I've never had time.

Other than some half-hearted attempts people have made at teaching me, DDR is as close as I've ever gotten. That's more flailing though.:(

DDR is like... westernized Highland Dancing.

....

Wait... that came out wrong.

POS Industries 07-31-2007 03:51 AM

Actually, it's Asian, so easternized.

Mirai Gen 07-31-2007 04:13 AM

Anyone can slow dance.

That means that I can, by technicality, dance.

Score!

Telephalsion 07-31-2007 04:25 AM

Slow dancing is nice, it can be everything from just a swaying hug, to a full out foxtrot.
It's sad that people look strangely on you if you try to do some disco moves, they're so fun.

Professor Smarmiarty 07-31-2007 05:45 AM

Old crazy legs is what they call me round these parts. That should answer all your problems.

Blues 07-31-2007 06:04 AM

I'm not allowed to dance anymore.

CelesJessa 07-31-2007 07:37 AM

Am I the only dancer?

I love dancing, but usually my dancing is the choreographed type(or at least semi-choreographed). I took dance classes for 13 years (Ballet, Jazz, and Tap), and I got to dance many different places, including in front of my entire town during the forth of July, and at an Embassy, and in some competitions. My senior year I got to go on stage completely by myself with a tap solo. (sadly, when it came time to do the final one of my senior solo, I got on stage and blanked at one part, luckily I was able to think on my feet and I made up my dance as I went until I remembered what I was supposed to do. Regardless, it was a frustrating way to end my time at the dance studio)

My number one favorite form of dance is tap dancing, followed by jazz. Jazz is fun because it's more free-form, and... I pretty much hated ballet. Mostly because my ballet teacher had the idea that if ballet wasn't your LIFE. you weren't good enough for her.

On top of that, I took a semester of swing dancing, in which I can dance both the lead(the person who directs the dance through subtle hand gestures as you go(the guy part, usually)) and the follow(the person who is directed(the girl part)). I prefer the follow. If you can get a good lead, swing dancing is AMAZING.

Someday I would love to learn other forms of dance, like ballroom dancing, but for now, those are the only ones in my repertoire. Other than those kind of dancing, I don't do a lot of non-choreographed dancing, but I don't go to a lot of dances, so that may be the reason.

Yay dance!

TheSpacePope 07-31-2007 09:13 AM

I will dance,
mostly with joy
never alone
and never with boys.

I am a master of tha Bootay shaking.
If you saw me shake this money maker,
you'd realize why, I am in fact,
stacking the paper up.

Love it

Sir Pinkleton 07-31-2007 09:38 AM

"The Santa dance" still hasn't failed me yet.

RaiRai 07-31-2007 10:41 AM

I've wanted to learn how to dance, actually. It just doesn't fit in with my lifestyle right now though, so it remains a dream. I want to learn rock and roll dancing with all that swirling around and being thrown over guys shoulders. <3

Telephalsion 07-31-2007 11:31 AM

I've learned a few Rock N' roll moves, one where the girl jups up and sits on my knees with her knees, and another where I sort of, swing her around like a hoola-hoop.
Wish I knew the basics though.

The Artist Formerly Known as Hawk 07-31-2007 11:36 AM

I can not dance and thus, I choose not to.

That's really all that needs to be said on the matter.

Barahad 07-31-2007 03:37 PM

I love dancing. It is good fun, and pretty good exercise. In public, I'm most comfortable dancing with friends who aren't trying to impress anybody with their 'fly moves' and 'happenin' 'tude'. When we can all laugh at ourselves, dancing is incredible fun, and we end up doing silly things.

...I believe Azisien can attest to that unique brand of danceable nonsense.

As for formal dancing...

Half a semester of swing (Jitterbug and a wee smidgen of Lindy Hop). I had to stop because all my papers started coming due on Thursdays, and the dance classes were on Wednesday evenings...and I tend to procrastinate on everything related to school.

Beyond that, I mostly do some variation on the two-step for essentially any and all other eras (80s, 90s, hip-hop, club, etc.). Left, right. Do something with your hands while going left and right. Repeat as may be necessary, throwing in head nodding/bobbing as may be required.

I can also do the twist, though that's not a particularly difficult dance to master, and has limited application these days (though it would be fun to apply it to hip-hop/rap music).

I plan on taking up swing again sometime this year, and would like to learn a few more ballroom dances, and maybe pick up some Latin (because Latin dancing has palpable attitude). If I ever get anywhere in swing, I'd also like to learn 'Aerials', because they just look really cool.

Hooray for dancing!

major_minority 08-02-2007 12:33 PM

when I dance, it's more like pivoting or swaying to the beat of whatever I'm listening to.

I'm not terribly coordinated, so anything more complex than that and I might be running into people, knocking things over, and creating general mayhem.

Zoran 08-02-2007 12:47 PM

Im not allowed to dance, court order.

Dude yes. There's nothing cooler than aerials. Although they wouldn't allow them at our dance practices, because if anyone got hurt, the club might have gotten shut down.

Did you even learn the Charleston at your swing dance class? (I think that's one where you dance in two big lines)

Telephalsion 08-03-2007 05:34 AM

The charleston is both it's own dance and one of the basics in swing dancing, I learned a few passages in Lindy Hop, basicaly, I swung my partner out so we stood side by side and did some mirror morements with hands and feet. It's really fun, especially when you stand right next to eachother, stomach to back, and do the exact same movement.

Good times...

This is only too true. However, given that I am about as agile as a brick wall, I'd probably be the guy who keeps his feet firmly planted on the ground.

Additionally, I think I would fear the woman who could swing me around in the air with ease. I'm not exactly your traditional lithe dancer's build. I'm a series of rectangles squashed into human form.

We were taught by an amusing French-Canadian pair, and learning started (and ended for me, unfortunately) with the Jitterbug. Fun dance, but really frustrating because it's a six-step (left foot: ball-heel; right foot: ball-heel, left foot: rock-step) and swing music is generally eight-to-the-bar, so you really have to think to stay in time.

So to provide a short answer: no, I didn't.

...though having just looked up the dance steps on Wikipedia (the 'Kick-Back Charleston', anyway), it seems a few modifications to the Jitterbug would allow me to perform it...

Still: swing dancing is fun.

And for those who have never witnessed the splendiferous nature of aerials and are confused by the gushing CelesJessa and I are engaged in, here is an excellent and demonstrative link:

If I am only ever half as good as these people, I will be content.
