What do you look for in a 2d RPG gameplay?
 

Well I was reading a book one day and it dawned on me. What do people look for in those 2d RPG games?

Well I'm not mainly pointing to just story or things like that. I want to know how you like to play! Like do you wanna go ad slash your way like in the little gameboy Zelda games but with RPG elements? Do you want to fight monsters like you do in final fantasy 7? Or anything of the kind. What do you guys look into RPG gameplay?

Basically I look for Chrono Trigger.

I'm lookin' for CT/FF6/Secret of Mana. So, all three. =P

I miss Zelda 2. RPG elements in a skill-based game. And I'd like a battle system that doesn't make you scroll menus as fast as you can.

Gameplay... eh, the same things I look for in 3D RPGs. But give me an Odin Sphere with platforming and enemies that flinch when hit and can't run through you and I'll be in Heaven. Story wise I either want big expressive sprites or a Phantasy Star IV comic book type presentation.

I look for a game with a good storyline. Then, so long as it isn't needlessly complicated, I'm more or less fine. I don't want to have to spend countless hours researching various upgrades and the like so I can do .3% extra damage - I want to have some goddamned fun.

I prefer turn-based over having active stuff, though, because I like having time to consider my options or grab something to eat.

Hmm well another thing I would like to add.

Do you guys like to have your characters in the final fantasy type battle be positioned left and right or top and bottom?

I could care less, I just watch the stats.

You know that one game that was like all 8-bit that those guys made and posted to be downloaded awhile ago? It wasn't finished, but had the very beginning of a silly storyline about missing pie and stuff?

Yeah. That game was awesome, so far as game play is concerned. Awesome to the maxxorz.

I'd love to see a full-blown RPG with a system like that.
