North Pole getting more attention

Anyone remember that thread in discussion that talked about the Canadians claiming the North Pole? Remember when I said Russia was also claiming it? Well, Now the Russians are:

Akademik Fedorov is carrying about 100 scientists in a bid to stake Moscow's claim to the Arctic sea bed.

The Rossiya icebreaker had plowed a path to the pole through an unbroken sheet of multiyear ice, clearing the way for the Akademik Fedorov research ship to follow, said Sergei Balyasnikov, a spokesman for the Arctic and Antarctic research institute that prepared the expedition.

"For the first time in history people will go down to the sea bed under the North Pole," Balyasnikov told The Associated Press. "It's like putting a flag on the moon."

Russian scientists hope to dive in two mini-submarines beneath the pole to a depth of more than 13,200 feet, and drop a metal capsule containing the Russian flag on the sea bed.

Balyasnikov said the dive was expected to start Thursday morning and last for several hours.

The voyage, led by noted polar explorer and Russian legislator Artur Chilingarov, has some scientific goals, including the study of Arctic plants and animals. But its chief goal appears to be advancing Russia's political and economic influence by strengthening its legal claims to the gas and oil deposits thought to lie beneath the Arctic sea floor.

The symbolic gesture, along with geologic data being gathered by expedition scientists, is intended to prop up Moscow's claims to more than 460,000 square miles of the Arctic shelf -- which by some estimates may contain 10 billion tons of oil and gas deposits.

The expedition reflects an intense rivalry between Russia, the United States, Canada and other nations whose shores face the northern polar ocean for the Arctic's icebound riches.

About 100 scientists aboard the Akademik Fyodorov are looking for evidence that the Lomonosov Ridge -- a 1,240-mile underwater mountain range that crosses the polar region -- is a geologic extension of Russia, and therefore can be claimed by it under the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea.

The subs will collect specimens of Arctic plants and animals and videotape the dives.

The biggest challenge, scientists say, will be for the mini-sub crews to return to their original point of departure to avoid being trapped under a thick ice crust.

"They have all the necessary navigation equipment to ensure safety," Balyasnikov said.

Denmark hopes to prove that the Lomonosov Ridge is an extension of the Danish territory of Greenland, not Russia. Canada, meanwhile, plans to spend $7 billion to build and operate up to eight Arctic patrol ships in a bid to help protect its sovereignty.

The U.S. Congress is considering an $8.7 billion budget reauthorization bill for the U.S. Coast Guard that includes $72.96 million to operate and maintain the nation's three existing polar icebreakers. The bill also authorizes the Coast Guard to construct two new vessels.

I guess if you want to claim territory, that's the way to do it.

(I didn't think this was really discussion worthy, but if it is, feel free to move it)

Well this says one thing to me.

The russians are planning to use the North pole to invade north america! Into the bunkers! Fire up the tanks! We got a continent to defend!

P-Sleazy 08-01-2007 10:50 PM

...That'd be "continent to defend". North America is a continent.

I say Canada gets it cause they said it first. First come first serve russian/american/danish bitchs. Deal with it. This is of course ignoring all previous claims since it was relatively abandoned by the other countries up until Canada formally claimed it.

Anyone else feel like playing Advance Wars now?

I don't know, but I always assumed that the North Pole was off limits to everyone, for resources and such. It kinda saddens me to see humans carving up more of the world for themselves.

P-Sleazy 08-01-2007 10:53 PM

That was Antarctica that was officially sanctioned as a neutral territory to all nations. And you know what they SHOULD do with antarctica? They should fight wars on there. Have everyone start off with a corner and just let em rip each other apart so as to avoid any un-necessary civilian bloodshed. And you know who wins? The Penguins. Thats who. They'll be the only ones who can survive that arctic freeze.

I say we get our heavy coats and claim the Arctic for ourselves. Think about it, we can all get our very own evil villain lairs and take over the rest of the world.

I didn't think I put this in "Off-Topic"... Strange...

But anyway, I still think it'd be interesting to see another cold war, but between Russia and Canada. There'd be spies again, except instead of James Bond, the Englishman, it'd be James Bond, the Mountie.

And who knows? Maybe all of this competition will fuel efforts to be more able to mine in the frozen sea, much like it did with the space program, and we'll have more resources.

'Coarse I'm not too fond of the gobbling up of resources and further disputes over territory, either.

If canada goes to war, there gona call in the USA even thought the united states are still at war.

But since USA wanna help everyone out so much! And plus to stop the russians from putting nuclear weapons in the north. The united states will take action and aid the canadians and fight side by side with them, just like they fought beside eachother in WW2.

They say that since there's a continental ridge connecting them to the artic that they should have claim? That's like saying that since the United States is connected to Canada, Canada is the property of the United States.

Or...heck, go down deep enough and every continent is connected to every continent by some sort of ridge or other rocky surface.

When I read that, I can't help to think about Eddie Izzard's bit on Imperial England.

Quote:

That’s how you build an empire: we stole countries with the cunning use of flags. You just sail around the world and stick a flag in: ‘I claim India for Britain.’

And they go, ‘You can’t claim us, we live here. 500 million of us!’

‘Do you have a flag?’
