Procrastination

So how many of you are procrastinators and how do you fight off the urge to be slothful?
I meant to start this thread last week.

I am a world-class procrastinator, and I still manage to pull through. Here's what I usually do.

(Will edit post with story later)

Another english word that my russian language useing mind does not know yet.
damn вы!

But good thing a english friend is on a messenger to give me a defenition.

Im not a "Procrastinate" and they probably just don't care about it cause if its like doing the dishes, if they live with someone they know if they just ignore it there fellow residences will do it.

I procrastinate all the time.

For example, whenever I have an essay due, I'll pop open Word, write a line or two, then come here for a good couple hours. Doesn't matter how many people are here, either. Then I'll start playing Minesweeper or something.

When it gets down to like twelve hours before the essay is due, that's when I start writing. Or sleeping. Depends how early the class is.

Well, I'm sitting here at work posting...

Sir Pinkleton 08-02-2007 10:13 AM

I was supposed to go buy myself shoes yesterday. Does that count?

I don't procrastinate too much, but every once in a while I'll get distracted by a game, some internet thing, or whatever.

major_minority 08-02-2007 10:17 AM

I procrastinate with some things, like essays, but not other things, like if I have math work, I'll do it as soon as I can.

Usually, to get over my procrastin-itis, I'll work in chunks. like, work for 20 minutes, then go grab a snack, then 20 more and go play some fire emblem then 20 more until I'm finished.
It works because I don't have to sit there and do it all at the same time, and it's more managable.

I stopped procrastinating a year ago, after realizing it does me (nor anyone I know, probably including you guys, but that's just a guess) absolutely no good. If I do procrastinate at all, it's with leisurely stuff (I keep putting off serious writing, for instance).

How did I stop? Well, I overloaded my university courses to such a degree, there was simply no room to procrastinate. Work 16 hours a day, 7 days a week, or be greeted by a string of Ds and Fs. Great way to break a habit, considering I was also paying for school and all.

I did my homework in the morning when I was in Highschool, except papers for english those I did in the week before it was due since we usually got a month to write every PROPER paper that had to be of a distinguished length. In college I started my homework at midnight the day before it was due (I guess it would be considered the same day it was due by midnight). This includes any and all essays I had to write in college.

3.5 GPA I gots. Probably woulda been better had I not procrastinated, which I DO somewhat regret now since I need a 3.7 to be seriously considered for the International business program at my school which only takes in 50 students each year meaning I now have an overloaded schedule this year to 20 credit hours just so I can get that 3.7.

Which also reminds me, I need to apply for a parking permit.

... You too!? The only time I even open Minesweeper is when I'm procrastinating on something! I'm now pretty good at it, my record in expert is something like 137.

I'd often do the homework IN THE CLASS IT'S DUE IN. I can't do homework at home. Ever. There's no place to really do it, for one thing, and there's too many alternatives that beckon for another. I usually end up going out with friends after school instead of doing homework.

Mondt 08-02-2007 12:25 PM

I do half my homework the night before it's due, half the day it's due. I've had two assignments all summmer and have only done about half of them.

Thus far the worst it's gotten me is a low C in history, but that's because I really only did half the homework ever. I made it up to a B and my teacher was nice and on the 89% she gave me an A >.>

God, I wish I had done that. I'd usually get it done on the bus ride to school, when I was still half-asleep and it was too dark/bumpy to really produce coherent work. Now that I'm in university, though, it all gets done at home. Which means in between visits here.

The Argent Lord 08-02-2007 04:11 PM

I've been known to type entire essays the morning they're due, catch the bus, and still get an A on the assignment.

Lady Cygnet 08-02-2007 04:22 PM

I was going to write a nice, long post about procrastination...but I decided to do it later. :p

In all seriousness, procrastination is probably my worst bad habit. I've been sitting on writings that I've been meaning to finish all week, but other things have taken precedence. (In my defense, though, two of those days involved all-day trips to downtown Chicago in order to get some things done that needed to be done ASAP.) I've actually gotten a couple of articles written, and I'm working on more to help offset the fact that I'm probably not going to get paid for this week, since my employers became ill and quarantined themselves in their house.

Demetrius 08-02-2007 04:29 PM

http://www.asciitable.com/ The little click when the border turns red game makes me sad, and gives me something to do other than...well you know.

0.203 seconds is my best thus far.

Buddha Fett 08-02-2007 04:47 PM

I'm so much of a procrastinator that I barely kept a free scholarship because I filled out and turned in the forms twelve hours after they were due.

Also, I should've gotten around to cleaning my place, oh, about two weeks ago.
