Is Equivelent Exchange In Effect Today?
A true discussion has inspired me to ask this of the NPFers... and i realize that i'm new so i probably won't be taken seriously here... but oh well.
we were talking about Alchemy and Equivalent Exchange, and if you must know, talking about FMA brought it out. like i said, we were talking about how alchemy in the show and Equivalent Exchange was still in effect... that was our discussion... what i am wondering now is this... how many here on the Forums believe that Equivalent Exchange is still in effect in the world to day since Alchemy 'supposedly' died out long ago... p.s. please give reasons or examples for your beliefs... |
Poll added because he asked so nicely.

*bow* thank you Fenris.
|
So are you asking if we think alchemy via the FMA Universe exists, or existed?
|
what people don't realize is that the FMA alchemy is based upon at least the basic principles of real world Alchemy... so i'm asking if people think that Alchemy and/or Equivalent Exchange still exsists
|
So yes, as I read your response, you are asking if we think that FMA style alchemy exists/existed. Real world alchemy is transmutation, and does work, it's just ridiculous to accomplish and the energy input vs output isn't worth the trouble. Unless you consider fision a form of alchemy, or even combustion engines. All of these things are a change from one state to another.
You're asking an awefully ambiguous question, especially for the Discussion Forum (IMO). Can you be more specific? Are you saying Equivalent Trade in terms of all aspects of life; ie: Opportunity Costs, Labor/Wages, Free Market balance, etc. or are you talking semi-mystical, dimensional crossing power granted through symbols and incantations? |
...What is "Equivalent Exchange?"
|
first, i must admit i like your Sig, quoting IT is nice...
anywho... sorry clown, you are missing the point of what i said... the Alchemy in FMA is based on alchemy in the real world, Alchemy was referenced on the study and original concepts of Alchemy, which is what i was referring to when i asked this. that does not deal with economics or circles... and Poetisch; In basic terms, "Equivalent Exchange" is a simple concept of taking one material and turning it into something else. Simple terms...you cant make something out of nothing. The original use of alchemy was to take the metal lead and convert it into gold. Though that particular process was never perfected, most of todays chemist and physicists use the concept of "Equivalent Exchange" and the other rules of alchemy in modern science, particularly chemistry. |
Laws of Conservation of Mass and Energy agree. Though FMA style "Equivalent Exchange" was very philosophical in nature, thinking the entire universe lived around the concept, whether it just be regular deals, moral equivalents, etc etc.
Philosophically, it's flawed. Scientifically, well no, I don't think we've made a way in which we can just lose mass or energy. It just goes somewhere else or takes a new form. |
As Mesden said as well as you, the FMA alchemy is based on a philosophy, not just physical tit et tat and was prevelent throughout all aspects of the FMA universe. That is why I was asking if we were talking merely about the conservation of mass/energy or the whole philosophy throughout all aspects of life.
In life gains are made, costs are paid in time and sacrifices made, but one thing outweighs the other. If they didn't then there would be no reason to make one choice over another, you have gain in the end (or so you think when you make the choice, you may lose out). I'm also waaayy behind on the thermodynamics bits, but I'm fairly sure they're having issues with conservation of mass and energy around absolute zero as well as funky stuff in particle accelerators. |
