My cat is afraid of the floor...
ok, i wish i were joking, but seriously...my cat is afraid of the floor.
she's been on the bed or couch for 2 days straight and i have to carry her to the litterbox twice a day so she won't stink up my bed wtf?!?!?! any suggestions? i put her on the floor and she did that cat "poof" up thing and then backed into a corner and started mewling....she isn't hurt at all, i checked. we didn't do anything new to the carpet...we've lived in the same apartment for over a year and she's been just dandy. she's about 3 years old. she has an appointment at the vet but not until tomorrow and...what are they gonna do?! i'm paying $35 for somebody to tell me my cat is a freak :( any vet students out there?? |
Have you been walking anywhere new outside of the house?
I'm just getting at the potential for bringing in new smells on your feet, smells she might find disruptive. Try masking, use aroma scent sprays. |
Maybe the cat stepped on something painful when she was on the floor. Or the smell thing, I was going to suggest that.
I would try to entice the cat with rewards any time she gets on the floor (treats, petting, brushed, etc). Maybe place some treats on the floor next to your bed, and if she gets those, put some more farther out. Or maybe try and put some blankets covering the floor to see if she'll walk on those. |
ohhh good ideas!! i'll try those.
as far as the scents, i can't think of anywhere new... however we had a HUGE storm the other night and since then she's been hiding a lot. i bet the thunder freaked her out...maybe the floor shook? i dunno. i'll try the treat and blanket thing tonight. |
Maybe the floor shook?
Oh dear oh dear.. If you have hardwood floors beneath those carpets they most definitely moved from the thunder. MOST DEFINITELY. Man...my entire house vibrates, window panes sounding like they're going to shatter, when I get thunder and lightning at my area. Treat + blanket = win! If you need to make a little route of blankets/towels to the litterbox to see if that helps. You should put her on the floor and take a picture of her spazzing XD |
Or it could be something more sinister, like cancer. As morbid as it is to suggest, a cat I used to have came down with an acute form of cancer and just plain refused to move anywhere without assitance. Even when we pushed him onto his feet he was visibly in pain. Maybe the meowing isn't fear but pain.

How old is your cat? Do you have any neighbors below your apartment?
|
Try a catnip trail to the litterbox.
