TV Nostalgia

Way back when Nickelodeon tried to cater to teenagers rather then younger kids, they made a few shows that I recall fondly. Among these shows were a few sitcoms, including The Adventures of Pete and Pete, Salute your Shorts, and a western themed one called Hey Dude.

Recently I got my hands on the first two seasons of Pete and Pete (PM me if you'd like to see them, I won't link here), and not having seen the series for over 5 years, I have come to remember why I loved the show so much. The writing is witty, and doesn't seek to accommodate little kids... it's actually an intelligent show at heart. I wish Nick could have continued to make such excellent shows rather then moving on to cartoons that don't make you think.

I was actually surprised that being so much older then when I first saw this show, that I still liked it, parts of it still make me laugh, or feel for the characters, or turn my head when an embarrassing situation arises. I can't say the same will be true for some of the shows that are produced now a days. I can't say I feel for many characters the way the show made me feel about the friendship between Pete and Ellen, or the oddity that was Artie (The strongest man... in the world ^^), no shows lately have made me laugh the way that little Pete made me laugh as he solved the various dilemmas he faced.

Do any of you remember this show? Or any other show for that matter that harkens you fondly back to your childhood. Why does it? Was it the characters, the plots, the music, or some intangible essence that you can't quite place your finger on?

Yes, I remember pete and pete, and it was brilliant. I do remember other shows fondly, but I'm pretty sure that if I were to watch them today, I would realize how badly written they were (Captain N, Super Mario Bros. 3 show). I do remember all the cartoons speilberg got into that were really brilliant, he should have quit his job of movie directing before he created A.I. [shudder] and kept making cartoons.

I remember Freakazoid, which if you watched today would make several hilarious references to fanboys and television standards (one episode was shot in "relaxovision," where all fight scenes were replaced with calm images, while the sound affects of the fight scene continued in the background.) Ahh, freakazoid. I hardly knew ye.

Salute Your Shorts was the best show on t.v. when I was that age. The names were one of the biggest laughs, though (Sponge, Donkeylips). My favorite episode was the one where they tried to scare Butnick (sic?) in the woods.

Pete and Pete, I loved that show too. "I am a dot, I am a dot, I am a dot..."

Yeah. Those are some of the best shows that ever were.
I am so repulsed by the crap that Nickelodeon cranks out these days when shows like Pete and Pete and Salute Your Shorts were once predominant.
I wasn't the biggest fan of Hey Dude. I don't recall why. Too Saved By The Bell-ish, maybe.
(But I liked Saved By The Bell!)

There was another show that just evaded my time.
Welcome Freshmen, that's it. Wierd show.
Those were the days of Nickelodeon dominance.
Dancing dogs, tatoos on little kids named Pete (What was her name again? I can't remember!)

I also enjoyed Doug. Unfortunately, that has to be considered the beginning of the end of Nick's glory days.

And Stick Stickly pwned.

Petunia. And he made her dance by wiggling his arm just the right way... awesome show.

I think they play re-runs of it on "Noggin" late at night now, along with Daria. That's about all the good stuff Noggin has though... during the day it's kid crap, at night it's Pete and Pete, Daria, Degrassi (middle-school drama), and some other middle school drama show.

I always liked "Are You Afraid of the Dark" the best. That, Pete and Pete, and Doug were my favorite shows during the end of elementary/beginning of middle school.

Yes! I loved those shows all of them in fact. I also remember watching shows like MacGyver and Quantum Leap. There was so many great shows back in the day can't think of them all right now. Curious though does anyone remember a show where pigs and sheep would like do battle with each other? No one seems to remember that one but I remember it.

BAH!

If you want old nick shows you have to go with You Cant Do That On Television.

Best show Ever.

Bleh. Was I the only kid who didn't watch Nickolodeon? I always was bombarded by people who said "You don't watch rugrats!?!?111!!one"

I get nostalgic for all the Saturday morning shows I watched...like Power Rangers. I saw a commercial for the new series (Spinoff #1983640928) and it had the old ?red? ranger on, and I got physically angry...and Rocko's Modern Life pwns Rugrats.
