Fuck Yeah With AWESOME On Top
They're going to be making some movie(s) based on Stephen King's Dark Tower series.
Who, exactly, is 'they'? Only mothafuckin' J.J. MotherFUCKIN' Abrams and Damon 'Grand Masta' Lindelof, that's who! Goddamn, even if I probably won't watch past movie four/five, this is the most boner-inducing news since I don't even know. Also, if you aren't a fan of the Dark Tower series, or Lost, or couldn't give a crap about this whole endeavor, I'm sorry for having drawn you into this thread, but I really couldn't care if you just went and fucked off, because fucking J.J. Abrams is making the Dark Tower series into film. |

He sold the option for $19... how fucking awesome is that? I don't really like the comics but if they stick with the story a bit more for the movies, this is gonna be the best thing since... ok the best thing in a long time. |
HELL YEAH! I love those books and that's an all-star team to make the movies.
|
Well the comics aren't really based on any of the books, are they, they're based on a made-up random backstory adventures for Roland or what-have-you.
Anyway, I'm really looking forward to this, and it always makes a great seven-part movie-series to look forward to. After each one finished you always wonder what else there will be to look forward to on the movie front, so they are always like "Well, let's make a seven-part movie series out of THIS book series", or at least a trilogy or something along those lines. Big fan of the books, I hope the movies are good. I also hope the Elric of Melnibone movies are good too. |
The comics that have been released so far are based on the story Roland tells the ka-tet in book four. I really liked the art in the comics, but they abused the narration boxes a bit. Otherwise, they're just a mostly visual transcript of The Wizard and Glass.
So, thoughts on who'll play the main characters? I think it'd be really cool if the guy who plays Sawyer on Lost could take up the mantle of Eddie, they're sort of similar in wisecrackiness and troubled pastitude. Of course, the obvious choice for Roland is Clint Eastwood circa 30 years ago, but I hear he's hard to book. |
The next choice would then be his current doppleganger, Wolverine.

...Is it wrong that I have not yet read the Dark Tower series? The only Stephen King book I've read is The Green Mile...
|
Yes, it is wrong. I haven't read any other Stephen King books (except like the short story The Langoliers), but The Dark Tower is pure awesome. Probably would've been better if I'd read at least Salem's Lot before reading it, though. I thought the inclusion of Father Callahan as a MAIN CHARACTER was a bit of a weakness. I was all right with SK's characters from all his books making cameos and such but Callahan pretty much became a member of the ka-tet in my opinion, and it was a bit off.
EDIT: Oh, and Stephen King's being in the books himself as an actual character in books six and seven and being a pinion that holds the entire universe together...was really, really, really, really, REALLY extraordinarily lame. To the ten thousandth power. I'd almost hope the movie ignored this plot point altogether if it weren't for the fact it was such an important part of the books. A darn shame, it is. In my opinion. I thought popular novelists decided long ago that putting yourself in the story is really, really stupid. |
in answer the the plot failures:
1. stephen king is quite clearly insane, and that is why ppl enjoy his books. 2. I have read almost all of Kings books, and the amount of times that refers to the dark tower series is incredible once you start looking for it.. the main evil villian is used in half-a-dozen of his books at least... but for movies? I really doubt that they could capture the essence of the books in real life... I mean, who would/could play Roland?! by far one of the BEST characters i have ever come across, from character development, personality, realness, and just plain uberness all across the board.. besides, I doubt many ppl would like the ending in a movie scene... |
